Objetivos
The students will be able to recognize and understand that the various cellular processes are organized and use recurring motifs, and that metabolism has evolved various processes in order to maintain homeostasis. Building on the Bioquímica UC, metabolic pathways will be studied and an introduction to their mathematical description is included. An introduction to drug action and metabolism is also included in order to show that drugs can be looked at as metabolic modulators. Identification of the organizing motifs allows students to develop an analysis of metabolism that can be easily transferred between systems; this is strengthened by the mathematical analysis of metabolism, that builds on the previous Mathematics UCs.

Programa
1. Metabolism, the metabolic map and recurring motifs.
2. Fundamental pathways of the cell – the example of glycolysis and its associated and parallel pathways.
3. Regulation as a tool to maintain homeostasis.
4. Fundamental mechanisms of regulation –enzyme activity; gene expression.
5. Recurring motifs in regulation – feed-back and feed-forward; enzyme covalent modification; channeling; futile cycles; switches; signaling; cascading.
6. Metabolic networks – mass action and power laws; mass balance; steady state.
7. Xenobiotic metabolism – biotransformation of xenobiotics; introduction to pharmacokinetics – LADME scheme vs. normal intracellular processes; non-compartmental and compartmental models; conserved mechanisms of drug action –targets and mode of action. Drugs as metabolic regulators.
8. Metabolic Control Analysis – Flux and response coefficients; sensitivity and elasticity.
9. Intracellular vs. Extracellular communication – first and second messengers; receptors.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem
Topics will be presented in lectures and exercise classes are organized so that students can, when appropriate, practice introductory exercises approaching metabolic network topics.
In the academic year 19/20, due to the COVID 19 pandemic, classes were held remotely, via ZOOM. The slides, support texts, case studies, explanatory videos and worksheets were made available on a weekly basis. Contact by videoconference were used during class time or in a period of clarification of doubts and use of the forum in Moodle.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final
Continuous Assessment Score = (Average of the Tests * 0.6) + (Work 1 * 0.2) + (Work 1 * 0.2)
- Test 1 - performed individually (by videoconference), minimum score of 5 values - 30%
- Test 2 - performed individually (by videoconference), minimum score of 5 points - 30%
- Work 1 (group seminar) - 20%
- Work 2 (Group poster) - 20%
Exam Score (all seasons) = 60% exam + 20% assignment 1 + 20% assignment 2 or 100% exam
