Objetivos

This curricular unit aims to provide students with the skills to develop a chemical engineering project, including the development of a process diagram, the determination of the mass and energy balances, the selection and sizing of equipment, and to estimate flow rates and characteristics of effluents generated, as well as the control points of the instrumentation system. The students must be able to perform an analysis of the economic viability and sensitivity of the project and acquire basics on the evaluation of industrial risks and plan actions to improve the safety of plants and people.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

This CU aims to provide students the content associated with the chemical project in the Chemical Engineering industry, as well as to provide the students with an insight into the applicability of the knowledge they have acquired throughout the Master course. Concepts about industrial economy and industrial hygiene and safety are also explained to complement and consolidate the knowledge associated with the project. This is a curricular unit that consolidates an integrated view of all features taught during this course, allowing students to seize how concepts such as scaling processes, mass and energy balance, estimation of effluents and flows, control and instrumentation of processes, economic viability, safety plan, etc., combine to implement a Chemical Engineering Industry.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

In the classes the fundamental concepts are lectured using audiovisual media techniques and illustrative real applications of these concepts are solved. Additionally, the classes will be used for monitoring the projects of each group and elucidation of specific questions about each project. Seminars about relevant specific themes will be available, normally presented by specialists in the field.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

The evaluation in this CU will be only a continuous one and will be supported in the development of a project of a particular chemical engineering industry, which will be made in groups of 3 to 4 students. The final evaluation of each student is obtained conjugating two distinct pathways:

-30% of the evaluation will be based on the performance of the student throughout the semester. The evaluation will be composed by several components such as utilization of acquired knowledge obtained during the course, problem solving ability, student contribution to the project elaboration, etc.

-70% of the evaluation will be based in the project presentation, oral discussion of the work and project quality. This evaluation is established by the teacher responsible for the curricular unit and other teachers of the CU.
