Objetivos

The objective of this curricular unit is the knowledge and understanding of the properties and structure of the foremost classes of biomolecules (sugars, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids), their interactions with the solvent water, and the mechanisms by which they react in a controlled manner in the context of the living cell.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

The student should be able to describe the structure and function of proteins, apply methods of isolation and characterization of protein, interpret enzyme kinetic parameters, understand the functions and chemical nature of diverse sugars and lipids, know the components and properties of biological membranes, the structure and characteristics of nucleic acid.
He will know the role of ATP, NAD(P)H and FAD in the metabolism, and the major metabolic pathways, being capable of performing bioenergetics calculations.

The student should develop the capacity to relate and integrate all concepts so as to visualize the molecular functioning of the cell as a whole.

Programa

  1. Introduction to biochemistry. Biodiversity of living organisms vs biochemical uniformity; different types of cells and their característics. Biological functions in aqueous system

  2. Biomolecules: aminoacids and peptides: properties; Properties, function and structure of proteins; methods of isolation, purification and quantification of proteins; Enzymes – reaction mechanism and kinetics; Structure and function of lipids, biological membranes – composition, function and transport systems. Nucleic acids and nucleotides – structure, properties, role. Genetic information flux – replication, transcription and translation. Recombinant DNA technology. Structure and function of sugars.

  3. Bioenergetics and metabolism: fundaments of bioenergetic, metabolic pathway, catabolism and anabolism. Glycolisis, tricarcoxylic acid cycle, pentose phosphate pathway, respiratory chain, betaoxidation of fatty acids, degradation of amino acids for energy gain, urea cycle.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

Theoretical contents will be presented to the students by means of informatic support – power point slides, that will be made available to the students. The theoretical content will be intercalated by practical classes, in which series of exercises relating to the theory will be given. Case studies will also be performed, in which the students will be able to integrate the concepts apprehended so as to make a report.

Attendance is a criterion for accessing the continuous assessment regime. Students who have a value higher than 30% of unjustified absences from all classes in the semester are denied access to the continuous assessment regime. It is the RUC that decides, on a case-by-case basis, whether to accept the justification for the absence.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

Continuous assessment: +23% Test 1+24% Test 2+23% Test 3+30% Work 1
Regular and Appeal Exams: 100% Exam or 70% Exam + 30% Work 1
Special Exam: 100% Exam
Interim Exam: 100% Exam

Work 1 corresponds to a set or sequence of small case studies, presented in class. The delivery date for these small case studies is expected to be 2 weeks later, taking into account the workload of the students in that period, in particular tests, so as not to interfere with the schedule of the other UCs.

The work is mandatory strictly in the continuous evaluation regime. The tests are mandatory in the continuous assessment regime, with equal weighting for the calculation of the average value whose weighting in the final grade is 70%.
Attendance is a criterion for accessing the continuous assessment regime. Students who have a value higher than 30% of unjustified absences from all classes in the semester are denied access to the continuous assessment regime. It is the RUC that decides, on a case-by-case basis, whether to accept the justification for the absence.
The minimum score of the weighted average of the 3 tests must be 9.5, with no individual minimum score for each test.
In the evaluation system by exam, in the 1st and 2nd season, the final classification will be the best of the options indicated, but bearing in mind that a minimum exam score of 9.5 is imposed.
