Objetivos

It is intended that after the attendance of this course unit, students are able to solve problems involving the equilibrium of particles and rigid bodies, with and without friction; to obtain the mass centre position and the moment of inertia of composite bodies; to resolve problems of stability and equilibrium through energetic concepts.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

Students must acquire basic mechanical skills (forces, moments, balance) indispensable in a civil engineering training.

Presencial

Pré-requisitos (conhecimentos prévios) e co-requisitos (conhecimentos simultâneos)

Mathematical concepts: trigonometry, vectors, internal product, external product.

Programa

Statics - 6,0 weeks
Fundamental concepts and principles. Equilibrium of the particle and the rigid body in a plane and in space. Free-body diagrams. Reactions at supports in a plane and in space. Analysis of the external connections of a rigid body.

Geometry of bodies - 3,0 weeks
Centre of gravity and centroid. Punctual and distributed masses. First moments.
Composite bodies. Distributed forces. Forces on submerged surfaces. Moment of inertia and second moments. Radius of gyration. Parallel-axis Theorem.

Friction - 3,0 weeks)
The laws of dry friction. Coefficients of friction. Angles of friction. Problems involving dry friction. Wedges. Wheel friction. Rolling resistance. Belt friction.

Virtual work method - 2,0 weeks
Systems of rigid bodies and machines. Work of a force during a finite displacement. Virtual displacements and virtual work. Work and potential energy. Equilibrium: potential energy and stability.

Two laboratory works are carried out (funicular of forces and friction), to consolidate students' competences

Observações

In current semester, classes were taken at school (33%) and online (67%). Continuous assessment was face to face and assessment by exams in online format.
