Provide students with an integrated education of cell and tissue technology, based on fundamental concepts of Cellular and Molecular Biology, Genetics, Immunology and bio-process, with applications in human and veterinary medicine.

  1. Introduction to Animal and Tissue technology: history; differences between animal cells and microorganisms; examples of animal cells applications in commercial production

  2. Basics concepts on Animal Cells: typical structure of animal cells; type of cellular cultures; cellular growth and propagation; cryopreservation; storage; quality control and safety; principal cell lines used in the industry; insect cells

  3. Cloning and heterologous expression in animal cells: genetic flow of information and molecular cloning; elements that are needed for the genetic expression in eukaryotic cells; heterologous expression systems in animal cells; viral DNA vectors; viral RNA vectors; baculovirus; plasmidic vectors; cells lines in biotechnological processes; expression in animal cells; DNA transfection in animal cells; selection markers

  4. Cell Metabolism and its control: energy sources; metabolic bioproducts; factors affecting the cellular metabolism

  5. Post-translational modification of recombinant proteins

  6. Mechanisms of cells proliferation and death

  7. Culture media for animal cells

  8. Bioreactors for animal cells: bioreactors project and operation; cellular kinetics; modelling; monitorization and control of cell cultures
