Objetivos
In this curricular unit, it is intended
that students acquire skills to elaborate
representative models of the
operation and functioning of processes
in the chemical and biotechnology
industry, allowing the students to
analyze and predict about the mode
of operation of such systems.
Based on this analysis the students
should be able to critically optimize
the operation of these processes,
using for that purpose an array of tools
ranging from simple spreadsheets to
specific software.

Programa
1. Nature and organization of optimization problems in
Chemical and Biotechnology processes.
2. Basic concepts applied to industry.
3. Linear programming optimization in Chemical and
Biotechnology processes: general concepts; the simplex
method; linear programming software.
4. Nonlinear programming in Chemical and Biotechnology
processes: Application with univariate and multivariable
problems. Application without restrictions and with
restrictions. Nonlinear programming software.
5. Integrated planning, scheduling, and control in the
process industries.
6. Applications to practical problems: design of a small heat
exchanger network, realtime optimization of a distillation column, chemical reactor
design and operation, etc.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem
The classes involve the exposure of theoretical contents. In classes involving the application of these contents, examples of application are presented whenever possible using computer systems with appropriate software. Small tasks are also proposed for students to consolidate the knowledge acquired. The resolution of previously proposed exercises is performed individually or in small groups.
Continuous evaluation will be based on a test (40%) and a group work (60%). These works involve the provision by the school of appropriate computer and software means and it is necessary to deliver a written report and oral presentation in English. The non-continuous evaluation will be done through a final written examination (40%), and the evaluation of the group work (60%) is considered in the final evaluation.
