Objetivos

This UC has as main objective to provide students with an integrated view of the organizational structure and the functioning of genes and genomes, taking into account technological advances in the methods of sequencing, annotation and analysis of their functioning. 

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

Students should acquire knowledge about bioinformatics tools and methodologies for search and analysis of sequences and their potential to predict function, as well as analysis of gene expression data at the level of RNA and proteins.

Programa

1-Organizational structure of genomes; Methods for genome sequencing, genome analysis and annotation. 2-Evolution of genomes and molecular phylogeny. Comparative Genomics. Definition of orthologs and paralogs genes. 3-Analysis of the genome-wide gene expression by proteomics and transcriptomics approach. 4-Functional Genomics. Metabolomics, RNomics, metagenomics and other omics. 5-Applications of bioinformatics in genomics. Algorithms for sequence alignment: single and multiple alignments; motif-search algorithms: motif representation and search systems available on the web. 6-Biotechnological applications. Laboratorial practical classes: Use of bioinformatic tools to perform sequence alignments and sequence database searches (BLAST e Clustal), phylogenetic analysis and cladograms, motif search and prediction of gene function, prediction of protein structure, interpretation of biological significance of genome-scale data.

The curricular unit is taught using expository and demonstrative methods with computer support PowerPoint presentations. The curricular unit consists of a theoretical and practical component in which students discuss current topics in the field of structural, evolutionary and functional genomics
