Objetivos

Consolidation and development of the knowledge acquired in precedent course units (Soil Mechanics and Foundations and Retaining Structures) and appliance to various types of geotechnical works, mainly shallow foundations and deep foundations.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

Consolidation and deepening of the knowledge acquired in the course units of Soil Mechanics, Foundations and Retaining Structures and application to various types of geotechnical works with a particular focus on shallow and deep foundations.

Skills and competencies: organized and systematic thinking; analytical capacity; critical thinking and innovative sense; inductive reasoning; effective communication in mother tongue and in English; use of data from technical literature; science and its context; appropriate use of information technology and communication; understanding of ethical principles and ethics of the profession and acting accordingly; teamwork; solutions

Knowledge acquired in precedent course units (Soil Mechanics and Foundations and Retaining Structures)

Programa

1.Reviews of Soil Mechanics and Foundations and Retaining Structures. Overview of EC 7: NP EN 1997-part 1
and EN 1997-part 2 (3 week).
2.Engineering Geology and geotechnical engineering methods of site and ground characterization. (1 week)
3.Parameters of strength and deformability of soils. In situ tests versus laboratory tests. Field tests and their importance in geotechnical design: SPT, CPT, DP, FVT, CHST, PLT, MPT, CSBPT, MDT (3 weeks)
4.Shallow foundations. Reviews. Types of foundations. Safety criteria. Bearing resistance. Settlements. EC7 safety checking assisted by laboratory and in situ testing. (3 weeks)
5. Deep foundations. EC7 rules. Bearing resistance of a single axially loaded pile from empirical and analytical design methods. Static load tests. Ultimate compressive resistance from ground test results and from static load tests. Pile groups: bearing capacity and settlements estimation. (4 weeks)

The theoretical and practical nature of this course unit leads to the alternation between theoretical and practical classes, in the classroom and in e-learning environment. The practical lessons emphasize the resolution of exercises for the application of theoretical concepts, research and analysis of technical and scientific papers.

Continuum evaluation: Test carried out in the classroom (70%),  Individual work uploaded in moodle platform (30%).
First and second epochs' Examinations: 100%.
