Objetivos

By the end of this course the student will acquire the competences to be able to solve problems involving the equilibrium of determinate structures in two and three dimensions; analyse the statical determinacy; determine support reactions and to represent internal forces diagrams. The student have to be able to apply the Principle of Virtual Work in determinate structures and to represent influence lines.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

Students must acquire basic basic skills related to isostatic structural analysis (statical determinancy, equilibrium, reactions, stresses) indispensable in a civil engineering training.

Pré-requisitos (conhecimentos prévios) e co-requisitos (conhecimentos simultâneos)

Knowledges of mechanics: forces, moments, equilibrium.

Programa

1 - STATICAL DETERMINACY (2,5 weeks)
The design of structures. Fundamental concepts in analysis of structures. Main models of structural analysis.
External determinacy. Improperly constrained structures. Internal determinacy.

2 - EQUILIBRIUM OF STRUCTURES IN TWO AND THREE DIMENSIONS (4 weeks)
Internal forces. Newton´s third law. Truss analysis. Free body diagram. Equations of equilibrium. Symmetric
structures subjected to symmetric and anti-symmetric actions.

3 - INTERNAL FORCES AND DIAGRAMS (4 weeks)

Linear elements. Internal forces in linear elements: axial force; shear force; bending moment. Internal forces
diagrams. Relations between load, shear and bending moment.

4. VIRTUAL WORK PRINCIPLE (2.5 weeks)
Definition of virtual work and virtual displacement. Principle of virtual work and its application to determinate
structures.

5. INFLUENCE LINES (2 weeks)
Travelling loads. Influence lines for support reactions and internal forces in determinate structures.

Obtenção de frequência

Accomplishment of the following components (evaluated on a scale of 0 to 20) throughout the semester:

- Individual exercises (T), with a minimum average score of 8.0 (75%);

- Exercises and Tests to be performed in Moodle environment (M) (20%);

- Active class participation (PA) (5%).

The individual tests will be carried out in the academic period, on a date communicated in the previous week, being:

- Five, if the assessment is completely online (all of which are counted for the calculation of the average, TP);

- Six, if the assessment is fully in person (average of the 5 best ones, TP).

If the assessment goes from online to face-to-face, during the semester, the rule stablished to the complete online assessment will remain.

In online exercises with a rating greater than or equal to 8.0 or in online exams with a rating greater than or equal to 10, oral tests will be carried out.

In the current semester, classes will be taught online, changing to face-to-face format as soon as the pandemic allows.
