This curricular unit is based on laboratory experiences representing theoretical concepts acquired in Separation Process IB, Transport Phenomena II, and Molecular and Cellular Biology curricular units.
It is intended that, in this curricular unit, the students acquire the following competencies:
- Plan, implement, develop and optimize experiments in the area of the curricular units that the laboratory work refers.
- Interpreting results of experiments that highlight some of the basic transport phenomena, instrumental methods of analysis and biochemistry.
- Correlate the theoretical models taught, with the proper applicability in the treatment of experimental results.
- Handle material and specific equipment used in carrying out the experiments.
- Assess the importance of the accuracy of the measurements to be made.
- Writing a scientific report clearly and objectively.
Laboratory IVB consists in a set of laboratory works involving the application of knowledge acquired in Separation Process IB, Transport Phenomena II, and Molecular and Cellular Biology.
Execution of laboratory experiences related to several curricular unit programs. Each experimental work is preceded by a discussion of scientific principles and procedures of the work protocol. The students should prepare the laboratory work by writting the necessary theoretical support, experimental procedure and calculations on the individual lab notebook, (mandatory). In the following week, students should have the results, calculations and data discussion in the lab notebook. This information must be available for evaluation by the teacher when requested.
Under distance learning, classes will be held by videoconference, whenever possible, explaining the procedure of each practical work proposed in the guide or alternatively a presentation of the procedure in commented powerpoint. Students' questions will be posted on the Teams forum. Presentations will be made available on Moodle explaining the techniques used in the proposed practical works, photographs of the equipment, reagents and laboratory material necessary to carry out the work and links to youtube videos demonstrating some biotechnological laboratory techniques.
Of the total classes planned, 40% of these should be taught in person, as soon as Pandemic conditions permit, so that students can train the basic techniques used in biotechnology.
