Objetivos
It is intended that students acquire in-depth knowledge of biological catalysis, so that in the end of the semester they know examples of biocatalysis in non-conventional media such as organic solvents, supercritical fluids and solid-solid media. It is also important that students understand the strategies and advantages of addressing environmental contamination using microorganisms, by taking into account the concerned pollutants.

Programa
- Biocatalysis in non-conventional media (NAM). Biocatalysis in organic solvents. Stability and enzymatic selectivity in NAM. Biocatalysis in the presence of ionic liquids. Biocatalysis in supercritical fluids. Biocatalysis in solid-solid systems. Biocatalysis in solid-gas systems. Greener NAMs. Physico-chemical aspects of biocatalysis in NAM.
- Biosensors, miniaturization of microelectrodes. Examples of biotransformations carried out on an industrial scale.
- Technologies of bioremediation.
- Enzymes used/improved for bioremediation.
- Wastewater treatment with microbial fuel cells. Enzymatic conversion of waste biomass and CO2.
- Approach to the problem of environmental contamination by hazardous compounds. Types of pollutants (organic and inorganic) and transport mechanisms in contaminated sites.
- Principles of biodegradation of pollutants. Microbial ecology. Factors that influence biodegradation. Mechanisms of biodegradation of pollutants.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem
This curricular unit comprises a theoretical / practical component, consisting of: presentations of theoretical concepts with informatical support of PowerPoint slides and an element of practical application for exercise resolution, which merges with the exposition of the theoretical contents. There is still a component of experimental classes for holding a small number of activities for better consolidation of the transmitted lectures.
The assessment by continues evaluation throught the term, presupposes the accomplishment of all the elements: the test, research work and laboratory work with report, weighted evaluation of 9.5 values.
The classification by final exam can be 100% of the classification or 75% the exam classification + 25% the evaluation of the report of the laboratory work.
Whenever, in the result obtained in the online or in-person, there is a situation of suspected fraud, during an evaluation process, the measures recommended in Order No. 40 / President / 2021 will be applied.
All the assessment elements carried out online take place with simultaneous connection, by video call, through the Zoom platform or Teams.
In the online exams there will be an oral exam whenever the classification is higher than 9.5 to validate the results obtained.
