  • Understand the concept, mechanisms and dimensions of technology transfer.

  • Understand the process and influencing factors of technology transfer: organizational factors and individual factors.

  • Understand the role of academic spin-offs in the technology transfer process.

  • Understand the entrepreneurial process and influencing factors.

  • Understand the process of generation, development and selection of new ideas.

  • Diagnose and conduct feasibility studies to create a new company.

  • Know how to develop a business plan.

  • Understand the process of enterprise/company creation and monitor the progress and development of a company.

1. Technology transfer
Introduction and basic concepts. Mechanisms, dimensions and modalities.

2. The process and the influencing factors
The role of universities. Factors that influence the process: organizational and individual. The role of the academic spin-offs (ASO).

3. Supporting structures for technology transfer
The protection of intellectual property; the role of the support structures.

4. The Entrepreneurial Activity
Terminology. The specificities of the academic entrepreneurship. The profile, skills and motivations of an entrepreneur. Factors of success and failure in the entrepreneurial activity. Types of entrepreneurship.

5. The entrepreneurial process: from idea to practice
Analysis of the idea and business promoters’ potential. Typologies of business (New Enterprise, Spin‑off, Franchising). The risk management. The importance of personal and professional networks.

6. The implementation of the project
How to build a Business Plan: importance and structure.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

This is a theoretical/practical curricular unit, based on the study and understanding along with the discussion of different issues/cases. This course involves a hands-on activity that includes the preparation of a business plan and the creation of a virtual company, tasks that will require intense work throughout the semester. Moreover, some of the topics covered by this course will be presented in seminars, where students will be asked to participate actively.

In terms of knowledge students will be assessed by: continuous evaluation or final exam.

The assessment by final exam does not include any element of continuous evaluation.

Continuous evaluation consists of: (1) a test conducted in class (40% of the final grade), (2) resolution and presentation of a case/group work (20% of the final grade), and (3) a final group assignment (40% of final grade).
