Objetivos

This curricular unit (CU) aims to provide students with the skills to develop a biotechnological project, including the market analysis, the development of a process diagram, the determination of the mass and energy balances, the selection and sizing of equipment, and to estimate flow rates and characteristics of the generated effluents, as well as the control points of the instrumentation system. The student should know the fundamentals of the analysis of the economic viability and sensitivity of the project and should acquire basics on the evaluation of industrial risks and plan actions to improve the safety of plants and people.

Programa

Seminars:

Seminars will be organized on topics relevant to the development of biotechnological projects, namely:

1. Analysis of the viability of the project and its expected profitability, including the identification of critical parameters for return on investment and profitability sensitivity analysis on its variation, concluding with the degree of risk of the project on the basis of this analysis.
2. Industrial hygiene based on the evaluation of indoor air quality and working conditions. Basic Principles for ventilation. Good habits.
3. Safety prevention and emergency management. Risk assessment models (FMEA, HAZOP, etc.). Emergency plan.

These seminars can be held in person or remotely.

Theoretical-Practical Classes:

During Theoretical-Practical classes, the students will be monitored in their projects and the following themes will be introduced to be considered in the projects in execution:

1. Project Planning.
2. Market analysis, study and setting of the production capacity at the plant, site selection for implementation of the factory.
3. Process Diagram preparation and layout of the plant.
3.1. Preliminary mass balance and process block flowchart.
3.2. Combined mass and energy balances using commercial simulators.
3.3. Equipment sizing.
4. Analysis of the economic-financial feasibility of the project and its profitability.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

The theoretical-practical classes will be used for the monitoring of the project of each group and elucidation of specific questions about each project. The fundamental concepts necessary for the elaboration of the projects will be taught by exhibition (using audiovisual media). Seminars about relevant specific themes will be available, normally presented by specialists in the field. This CU will only have continuous assessment which will be carried out based on a project of a biotechnology industry, prepared in groups of 3 to 4 students. The final evaluation will be obtained conjugating two distinct pathways:
- 30% of the evaluation will be based on the performance of the student throughout the semester. The evaluation will be composed by several components such as utilization of acquired knowledge obtained during the course, problem solving ability, student contribution to the project elaboration, etc.
- 70% of the evaluation will be based in the project presentation (written and oral English language), oral discussion of the work and project quality. This evaluation will be established by the responsible for the CU and other professors of the CU.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

Final grade = 30% Performance + 70% Project

In terms of individual assessment of the group work, it is indicated that:
- Even if the student has signed the work, a null classification can be attributed to the student who does not appear in the oral presentation and discussion, or others considered relevant by the CUR.
- Students in the same group can be given a different classification, based on the performance of each element throughout the semester and the presentation and oral discussion of the project, considering the mastery of the content of the work carried out.
