Objetivos
Consolidation and deepening of the knowledge acquired in the course units of Soil Mechanics, Foundations and Retaining Structures or Geotechnical Structures and application to various types of geotechnical works mainly on shallow and deep foundations.

Knowledge acquired in the course units of Soil Mechanics, Foundations and Retaining Structures or Geotechnical Structures.
Programa
1. Reviews of Soil Mechanics, Foundations and Retaining Structures or Geotechnical Structures CUs.
Overview of EC 7:NP EN 1997-part 1 and EN 1997-part 2 (3 weeks).
2. Engineering Geology and geotechnical engineering methods of site and ground characterization. (1 week)
3. Parameters of strength and deformability of soils. In situ tests versus laboratory tests. Field tests and their importance in geotechnical design: SPT, CPT, DP, FVT, CHST, PLT, MPT, CSBPT, MDT (3 weeks)
4. Shallow foundations. Reviews. Types of foundations. Safety criteria. Bearing resistance. Settlements. EC7 safety checking assisted by laboratory and in situ testing. (3 weeks)
5. Deep foundations. EC7 rules. Bearing resistance of a single axially loaded pile from empirical and analytical design methods. Static load tests. Ultimate compressive resistance from ground test results and from static load tests. Pile groups: bearing capacity and settlements estimation. (4 weeks)
6. Evaluation of soil liquefaction, according to theEC8: NP EN1998-part 5. (2 weeks).
