  • Especialização em Engenharia e Gestão de Energia na Indústria e Edifícios (60 Créditos ECTS)
  • Mestrado em Engenharia e Gestão de Energia na Indústria e Edifícios (90 Créditos ECTS)

Unidades Curriculares

Energy Audits and Energy Management Systems

MEGEIE07 - ECTS

It is intended that the trainee obtains an in-depth knowledge about the various phases of an energy audit, taking into account, among others, measurements of consumption, establish an Energy Rationalization Plan and verify its execution. It is also intended, in accordance with existing standards, in particular ISO 50001, to design and monitor the energy management system in a company

Thermics of Buildings

MEGEIE01 - ECTS The CU will provide the student with fundamental knowledge:
i) on matters relating to the sciences of construction, namely on building materials - thermal insulation materials, glass, among others - and on current constructive solutions for structures, walls, floors and roofs;
ii) relating to concepts of building physics with a view to analyzing the thermal behavior of different building elements;
iii) on the regulatory impositions imposed on the thermal performance of buildings.

Ventilation and indoor Air Quality

MEGEIE02 - ECTS Provide students with knowledge of building ventilation to ensure indoor air quality (QAI). Know the regulations and the main standards of ventilation. Know the principles of natural ventilation and mechanical ventilation and know how to design ventilation systems.

Energy Performance of Service Buildings

MEGEIE08 - ECTS It is intended to provide students with knowledge about energy performance assessment of buildings, specifically on the Energy Certification System for Buildings (portuguese SCE), the legislation applicable to Residential Buildings and Commercial Buildings and Services. To know the LEED certification system.

Efficiency and Rationality in the Use of Electric Energy

MEGEIE04 - ECTS At the end of the UC the student must know the origins of the costs and prices of electricity; interpret an electric bill; be able to do an analysis of electricity tariff alternatives; identify opportunities to rationalize electricity consumption for lighting and power systems; perceive the operation of reactive energy compensation systems; to perceive and to identify possible causes of disturbances of the characteristics of the electrical quantities; identify alternatives for the local production of electricity and size a local production facility. The student should be able to combine the operation of the generation systems with static energy storage systems, in a consumption facility, and mobile (electric mobility). The student should also be able to explore different roles of consumer and production facilities (prosumer) in a smart grid.

Thermal Energy Management

MEGEIE06 - ECTS

It is intended that the student acquires in-depth knowledge about: types of equipment used in air conditioning and heating installations; renewable energy sources such as biomass and solar energy and renewable energy conversion equipment.

Sustainable Development, Energy and Environment

MEGEIE03 - ECTS

The Curricular Unit (CU) addresses the knowledge about Sustainable Development for definition of business strategies or nations strategies, but also in the application of instruments and evaluation models that allow to classify the sustainability of energy management and environment management. Throughout the CU, the student should be able to: identify the strategic guidelines of the Sustainable Development Policy; establish goals and targets for compliance with these guidelines; plan and monitor integrated actions for energy and environment management that concretize the achievement of goals and objectives; design and apply sustainable development evaluation models, customized to activities and processes.

Instrumentation, Control and Technical Management

MEGEIE09 - ECTS It is aim of this course unit is to give students the necessary knowledge to understand how the building automation and control systems (BMS) work.

The objective of this course is that the students get to know the legal requirements about the existing technical systems in buildings, in particular about the building automation and control systems (BMS) that must be included and which are the Decree-Laws, the ordinances and the regulations that impose those requirements.

To give students basic knowledge about describing automatic control systems by means of block diagrams and knowledge about the most frequently used types of controllers.

To give students at least one tool for describing sequential systems.

It is also the aim of this course that students get a notion of the parts that should compose a project of a centralised technical management system.

Energy Simulation

MEGEIE05 - ECTS

Provide students with knowledge about energy simulation of buildings using simulation programs, understanding the bases of their calculation algorithms and learn how to use them for different purposes, namely to calculate thermal loads in the design of air conditioning systems, to calculate consumption and studies of energy efficiency measures and for energy certification of buildings.

Project Manegement

MEGEIE12 - ECTS Introduction. Project concept and investment decisions in the business context
Life cycle: phases and characteristics Projects, Investments and business strategy.
From strategic analysis to investment analysis.
Base structure for business valuation. The business plan.
Financial Project Evaluation Topics Profitability Analysis, Financing and Assessment Methods.
Please note that most of the topics in this course, are only relevant in Portuguese language since accounting standards and tax rules are specific to Portugal.

Energy Consumptions in Industry and Transports

MEGEIE10 - ECTS

It is intended that the student acquire a sound knowledge of the Regulation of the Management System of Intensive Energy Consumption and the Regulation of Energy Consumption Management for the Transport Sector.

Installation, Conduction and Maintenance of Energy Systems

MEGEIE11 - ECTS Provide students with integrated knowledge about the functions of interaction with the equipments from the moment of deciding on their selection until the end of their useful life.

Project in Engineering and Energy Management

MEGEIE13 - ECTS

The UC of Project in Engineering and Energy Management aims at the application of the topics addressed during its training and integration of previously taught knowledge in the course curriculum of the course and experience that the student may have. The skills to be developed include, on the basis of a real case in the industry or service buildings, one or more of the following three components:

- carry out an energy audit, propose improvement measures and integrate them into an Energy Rationalization Plan (in the case of a service building, also to include an energy certification component).

- monitor and validate the implementation of an Energy Rationalization Plan.

- Implement an energy management system in a company.
- carry out an analysis of the technical and economic feasibility of transversal measures to improve energy use.

It is also intended that the student becomes familiar with the methodologies associated with knowledge sharing, such as oral presentations, posters and articles.
