In the early chapters is intended that students understand how substances are formed and the extent to which its structure influences the properties of the respective materials. They are also introduced to the fundamentals of organic chemistry as a basis to Biochemistry - the chemistry of life.
A particular emphasis is given to the acid-base chapter of acid-base, focusing on concepts such as buffers and titrations (including polyprotic species), given its relevance to the Biochemistry.
Notions of Chemical Thermodynamics are also introduced, to predict the amount of energy released or absorbed during a reaction, its spontaneities, etc., which are also relevant concepts for the understanding of biological reactions.
Finally, Oxidation-Reduction reactions and electrochemistry are discussed, given their importance for biochemistry, materials (corrosion)
As this course does not include laboratorial classes, small experiences will be executed during the TP classes, whenever possible, so that students can understand the topics being studied. Some examples are the construction of a galvanic cell during the redox chapter, the preparation of solutions from two salts (one with negative enthalpy of dissolution and the other with a positive one) during the chemical thermodynamics chapter, etc. Students are also strongly encouraged to solve exercises, autonomously, out of the classroom (either alone or in groups).
Students can be evaluated either by making 2 tests or a final examination. In the first situation, the arithmetical media of the marks obtained in the tests has to be higher than 9,5 values, in order to succeed; in the second case, the examination mark has to be at least 9,5 val.
