Objetivos

The objective of this curricular unit is the attribution of competences in the field of ambient air quality assessment and the prevention and control of the emission of atmospheric pollutants.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

The learning result constitutes the attribution of the following competences:
•Understand the functioning of monitoring systems and specify the function of each of its constituents; •Manage and ensure the quality of air quality networks: Select sampling sites and develop monitoring programs; Determine the effectiveness and efficiency of monitoring activities and analyze results; •Identify air pollution cause-effect relationships; •Identify and apply methodologies for preventing and controlling atmospheric pollution; •Select and control gaseous effluent treatment technologies.
•Assess the legal compliance of gaseous emissions in industrial facilities.

Programa

Module 1 - Air Quality
Air pollution: sources and types of air pollution, air quality trends; main atmospheric factors that affect air pollution: wind; atmospheric stability; air pollution and urban climate.
The effects of air pollution: increased greenhouse effect, ozone layer depletion, acidification and eutrophication, photochemical pollution, reduced visibility and effects on human health.
Dispersion of pollutants in the atmosphere – behavior of plumes in the atmosphere; calculating the height of chimneys; introduction to modeling the dispersion of pollutants in the atmosphere
Measurement of pollutants in ambient air: techniques and methods for measuring gaseous pollutants
Air quality monitoring – air quality monitoring objectives; choice and selection of sampling sites; representativeness of a place; planning a monitoring program; analytical control and quality control
Air quality networks – objectives of an air quality network; urban networks, industrial networks and background networks; processing and analysis of data from an air quality network; National Air Quality Network and its articulation with the European Network
Legislation applicable to the Atmospheric Environment: international conventions, community directives and national decrees.

Module 2 - Gaseous Effluent Treatment
Characterization of emissions: industrial, mobile and natural; methods of continuous and manual sampling in industrial sources: measurement of gaseous pollutants in stationary sources; methods of sampling and measuring pollutants in mobile sources.
Particle separation principles. Removal efficiency. Input Distribution, Retained Distribution and Output Distribution
Cyclone separators. Separation principles. Operational variables. Design of inverted flow cyclones.
Electrostatic precipitators. Separation principles. Operational variables. Sizing of flat electrostatic precipitators.
Dry filtration. Separation principles. Operational variables. Sizing of bag filters.
Gas-liquid absorption. Examples of applications. Sizing and operation of columns with filling.
Gas-solid adsorption. Examples of applications. Adsorbents and isotherms. Gas-solid contact models. Dimensioning (simplified cases).
Wet washers. Separation principles. Operational variables. Sizing of washers.
Incineration. Application examples. Safety and explosion limits. Mass and energy balances.
Reference to specific separation processes: desulfurization, denitrification, removal of organic micropollutants and heavy metals.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

The UC is divided into two modules: 1-Air quality; 2- Treatment of Gaseous Effluents.

Although there is an evident interaction between these two themes, it is important to study them separately, since the approaches to the themes have separate concepts and management models.

The sequence of approach to the subjects allows that, throughout the study, the aforementioned interaction of the two themes can be identified, which is essential for the competence of air quality management and prevention/control of air pollution.

The exposition of the contents takes place in the TP and Laboratory classes, using a lecture and case study presentation.
During the class, oral and written participation of students is required to assess knowledge and the evolution of learning. In both cases, participation is evaluated at the QATEG Forum.

Tipo de avaliação

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Componentes de Avaliação

Designation Peso (%)
Participação presencial 50,00
Trabalho laboratorial 50,00
Total: 100,00

Componentes de Ocupação

Designation Tempo (Horas)
Estudo autónomo 87,00
Frequência das aulas 75,00
Total: 162,00

Obtenção de frequência

Attendance at 80% of theoretical-practical classes and 80% of laboratory classes, whether in person or at a distance, is an essential condition for continuous assessment.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

Continuous Assessment: QATEG Forum (50%)+Laboratories (50%)
Assessment by Exam: Exam (100%)

Minimum grade of any component = 10v.

The on-site evaluation is equal to the final mark of the QATEG Forum. The final score of the QATEG Forum is the average rounded by zero, of the ratings given to the responses. The improvement of each answer does not eliminate/replace any answer attempt.
Final Laboratory grade is equal to the average of the lab report ratings.
