Objetivos

1- To apply the fundamental concepts of Digital Systems to characterize and implement logical functions and respective circuits.
2- To understand, interpret and implement combinatorial logic circuits.
3- To understand, interpret and implement basic sequential logic circuits and implement state machines.
4- To carry out laboratory practices to consolidate and complement theoretical knowledge as well as to develop the ability to work in groups and organize the work environment

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

Provide students with in-depth knowledge of digital systems as well as their control through synchronous state machines.
Familiarize students with breadboarding techniques and the most common TTL and CMOS digital components and develop circuit synthesis and analysis capabilities. Instill in students the ability to carry out group work and to organize the work environment.

Basic knowledge of electricity.

Programa

1. Variables and Logic Functions: Variables and Logic Functions; Logical Operators; Representation of Logical Functions; Boolean algebra; Circuits with NAND and NOR; Standard forms.
2. Synthesis and optimization of Boolean Functions: Karnaugh maps; Functions with Incomplete Specification.
3. Basic Combinatorial Circuits: Encoders, Decoders and Transcoders; Multiplexers and Demultiplexers.
4. Basic Sequential Circuits: Static Latch and Dynamic Latch; Flip-Flops JK Edge-Triggered, D and T.
5. Registers and Counters: Shift Registers; Ring counters; Synchronous Binary Counters; Asynchronous Counters.
6. Synchronous Sequential Circuits: Moore State Machines; Elimination of Redundant States.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

Theoretical-practical classes:
In these classes, the concepts of each of the program's themes are taught. Illustrative examples of the different subjects are developed and application exercises are carried out in order to consolidate the methodology suitable for different situations. Various activities are also carried out to consolidate the acquired knowledge. These activities include the resolution of additional exercises, individual and group research work, presentations of assignments results and exercises to colleagues.
Laboratory classes:
At the same time, laboratory classes take place where the student performs tasks to apply the knowledge acquired in theoretical-practical classes. A part of the laboratory classes is intended to carry out a project in which one intends to implement an arquitecture which includes a sequential synchronous circuit.

Obtenção de frequência

There are two assessment components: a theoretical (T) and a practical (P). Theoretical assessment is obtained by carrying out 3 mini-tests (mT) throughout the semester or, for repeating students or those excluded from continuous assessment, by an exam (Ex) at the end of the semester.
It is not possible to take more than one test on each assessment date, meaning that a student who fails any of the mini-tests will only be able to recover these tests on the normal exam date. The grade for the theoretical component of the assessment results from the average of the mini-tests or the exam grade and is a value presented to 1 decimal place.
Failure in any of the mini-tests and/or the exam results in failure in the theoretical component of the assessment and, therefore, in failure of the curricular unit.

For students attending Digital Systems for the first time and who have never attended Digital Systems 1, the practical assessment consists of laboratory work (L) and a final project (PF), work that must be original and prepared with the active participation of all members of the group that the student is part of. Note: the number of laboratory works depends on the academic calendar as per the plan presented to students.
The laboratory work and the project are evaluated individually based on the students' performance in preparing the work, in the respective classes (DA) and the final discussion/presentation (Ap), and in groups depending on the report presented (RF).
The practical assessment is determined by the weighted average of the classification obtained in each laboratory work (Lx) and in the project and is presented to 1 decimal place.
This component of the assessment will only be completed when the deadlines established in the plan disclosed to students have been met and after all components and other materials requested in the laboratory have been returned.
Failure to deliver or fail any of the laboratory work or failure to complete or fail the final project will result in failure in the practical component of the assessment and, therefore, in failure of the curricular unit.

Students who are excluded from continuous assessment, within a maximum period of 15 consecutive days after exclusion from continuous assessment or until the last class (whichever comes first), will have to contact the person responsible for the UC to find a solution that makes it possible to completion of practical assessment in a timely manner. If this does not happen, the student fails the UC due to lack of the practical component of the assessment.

Students who attended Digital Systems 1 in previous years but were unable to successfully complete the practical component of the UC assessment will have to contact the UC manager during the first fortnight of classes to be admitted to the independent assessment of the practical component of the assessment. If this does not happen, the student fails the UC due to lack of the practical component of the assessment.
Students admitted to this form of assessment will have to carry out independently (without formal access to the laboratory and without face-to-face classes) a special project, work that must be original and prepared with the active participation of all members of the group that the student is part of. The special project is assessed individually based on the student's performance in the final discussion/presentation (Ap) and in groups based on the intermediate reports (RI) and final report (RF) presented.
The practical assessment is determined by the weighted average of the classification obtained in each element of this assessment component and is presented to 1 decimal place.
This component of the assessment will only be completed when the deadlines established in the plan disclosed to students have been met and after all components and other materials requested in the laboratory have been returned.
Failure to deliver intermediate or final reports, or failure to complete any of these reports or failure to complete or fail the discussion/presentation of the final project will result in failure in the practical component of the assessment and, therefore, in failure of the curricular unit.

The minimum grade for each of the assessment elements is always 9.5.

Grades:
(1) All assessment elements are represented on a scale of 0 to 20 values ​​and are subject to a minimum score equal to or greater than 9.5 values.
(2) According to the assessment regulations currently in force, all installments are presented to 1 decimal place, except for the final grade (NF), which is rounded to the nearest unit.
(3) Some of the assessment elements may be obtained through peer assessment processes.

Provas e trabalhos especiais

The holding of tests in a special period for final year students, working students and association leaders, is subject to registration at the Academic Services as per current regulations. The eventual holding of a special period exam only contributes to the theoretical component of the assessment. Students interested in carrying out the practical assessment at this time will have to inform the responsible teacher of their intention until the last day of classes to define the schedule and establish the project's statement.

Avaliação especial (TE, DA, ...)

Working Students, High Competition Athletes, Associative Managers and Students under the Law of Religious Freedom must contact the person responsible for the UC, during the first fortnight of classes, to present their relevant specificities, as provided for in the respective legal diplomas.

Melhoria de classificação

Taking exams for improvement purposes is subject to registration at the Academic Services in accordance to current regulations. The improvement of the grade focuses only on the theoretical component of the assessment.

Observações

Attendance:
Based on the Regulamento de Avaliação do Aproveitamento dos Estudantes da ESTSetúbal/IPS, the Pedagogical Council decided that, in order to carry out a course in continuous assessment, the student must be present in a minimum percentage of 75% of classes (by type). Failure to comply with this rule excludes the student from continuous assessment, applying the rules and deadlines established in this course sheet.

Enrollment on the course's Moodle page is mandatory in order to access the materials available and to access the various assessment tools (mini-tests, practical assignments and exams).

Rules for taking tests and other assessment elements:
In addition to the rules set out in other official IPS and ESTSetúbal/IPS documents, the rules for carrying out the assessment tests are available for consultation on the subject's Moodle page, are mandatory and constitute an extension to this subject sheet.

Repeat students:
Students who failed Digital Systems 1 but who obtained a positive assessment in any of the components (theoretical or practical) last year may be exempt from taking that component of the assessment this year. To do this, they must send an email to the person responsible for the curricular unit, during the first fortnight of classes, declaring their intention to maintain the previous year's grade. However, if the student chooses to retake any previously approved component test, the classification from the previous year is immediately forgotten and the classification obtained this year prevails.
