Objetivos

The purpose of this course is to introduce the fundamentals of Chemistry, so that the students will be able to further understand other fundamental issues for a Mechanical Engineer, as material constitution, chemical processes, mass and enthalpic balances, corrosion, etc.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

During the first chapters (atomic structure, periodic properties, molecular structure, and molecular interactions) the student is introduced into the substance’s molecular structures, to understand the macroscopic properties of the materials from their microscopic structures.

The aim of the next chapters is to introduce the chemical reactions, so that the student learns to determine the amount of products and / or energy that it is possible to produce from a specific chemical reaction (for both irreversible and reversible cases). These are important features to understand chemical processes, the concept of an engine yield, to execute mass and enthalpic balances, etc.

A special attention is given to Acids and Bases and to Redox reactions, as they are considered as the most important for their professional lives. Corrosion properties are included into the redox reactions, for instance.

The purpose of the last chapter is to introduce the most common hazard symbols used in chemical products, for the students own protection in their future professional lives.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

As this course does not include laboratorial classes, it is a common strategy to execute small experiences in the classroom, to illustrate the concepts that are being studied. Some examples are the construction of a galvanic cell during the redox chapter, the preparation of solutions from two salts (one with negative enthalpy of dissolution and the other with a positive one) during the chemical thermodynamics chapter, etc.

Students can be evaluated by two tests or by a final examination. In the first situation, the arithmetical media of the two marks has to be at least than 9,5 values, being both marks simultaneously higher or equal than 8,0 val, in order to succeed; in the second case, the examination mark has to be at least 9,5 val.
