Successfully completing the learning program students will be able to understand the role of sensors and actuators in process automation as well as the fundamentals that underlie the functioning of these devices.
1 – Metrology: absolute errors, relative errors, systematic errors and random errors; notions of uncertainty, dispersion, accuracy, accuracy class; calibration; static and dynamic characteristics of measuring systems and instruments.
2 – Sensors: potentiometric; strain gauges; resistive; capacitive; inductive; RTD; encoders; thermistors; thermocouples; piezoelectric transducers; photovoltaic transducers; Hall effect; optics and ultrasound.
3 – Actuators: valves, engines, cylinders and injectors.
4- Industrial communication networks and protocols.
Theoretical-practical classes consisting of:
- Exposition of the subject and critical reflection through discussion with students.
- Case studies and application exercises.
Laboratory classes consisting of:
- Experimental work.
- Use of real devices of measurement instrumentation, sensors and actuators, studied in the course.
The assessment is based on:
Conduct two assessment tests or final exam (60%).
Performing laboratory work with report delivery (20%).
Conducting a Seminar in English language with the theme (20%): “Sensors and Actuators in Mechanical Engineering Systems”. The seminar is held in groups with a maximum of 3 students. There will be a 10-minute oral presentation subject to 5 minutes of discussion. The grade is given as follows: 20% Seminar Quality + 50% Presentation Quality + 30% Discussion.
