Equip students with mathematical, scientific and engineering skills for the identification, formulation and solution of pump and fan design problems

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

A - Ability to use mathematical, scientific and engineering principals to the identification, formulation and solution of pipe network design problems; namely, for problems with:

A.1 - Incompressible fluids

A.2 - Compressible fluids

B - Ability to use mathematical, scientific and engineering principals to the identification, formulation and solution of pump and fan design problems.

Modo de trabalho

Programa

1. Bernoulli equation; viscous friction; Moody chart; Common head loss expressions. Head losses in accessories. Water, fuel gas and ventilation distribution networks.

2. Design of fluid distribution networks: Design flowrates considering actual demand. Design considering constant velocity, constant head loss and economic criteria. Common solutions for water, fuel gas and ventilation distribution networks.

3. Pumps and fans: Classification and performance curves. Selection of pumps and fans. Cavitation and NPSH.

4. Standards and design recommendations (e.g., ANSI/ASME, EN, NP e ISSO). Inspection and certification; Portuguese Ministerial Order Nº390/94.

5. Pipework design. Stresses, forces on curved surfaces and hydraulic transients; Pipe wall thickness and accessories for thermal expansion, connections, support and insulation.

6. Pipework and pump design for other fluids: Liquid fuels, compressed air, criogenic liquids, steam, oxygen, hydrogen.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

In TP classes one tries not to impose contents, but to ask students to rediscover, by themselves (and with a little guidance), the syllabus topics.

PL classes are used to perform laboratory work and to solve engineering design problems related to real live examples.

Autonomous work is promoted and:

a. at least one tasks should be written in English

b. at least one presentation should be in English

c. task groups aim at the promotion of group dynamics, promoting leadership, cooperation and responsibility

d. at least one task considers the solution to a real live example (preferably suggested by an external institution).

Tipo de avaliação

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Componentes de Avaliação

Designation Peso (%)
Prova oral 50,00
Trabalho escrito 25,00
Trabalho laboratorial 25,00
Total: 100,00

Componentes de Ocupação

Designation Tempo (Horas)
Estudo autónomo 57,00
Frequência das aulas 75,00
Trabalho escrito 20,00
Trabalho laboratorial 10,00
Total: 162,00

Obtenção de frequência

Continuous assessment includes small tests and laboratorial assignments (50% of final grade) and an oral discussion (50%). An alternative assessment is based on a final exam (100% of final grade) dependent on the approval in mandatory practical assignments.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

(grade obtained in small tests and laboratorial assignements)*0,50+(grade obtained in the oral discussion)*0,50
