Objetivos

- To understand the main concepts associated with the ecology of marine and estuarine ecosystems

- To acquire knowledge about the structure and functioning of marine and estuarine ecosystems, including biological processes and interactions with the physical and chemical environment

- To know about the evolutionary origins and biology of the main groups of marine organisms and integrate this knowledge in addressing functional issues of adaptation of organisms;

- To identify the morphological characteristics of the main aquatic taxonomic groups, evolutionary relationships and adaptations to the marine environment;

- To know the main taxonomic classification systems

- To develop the ability to carry out scientific work

1. Characterization of the marine environment and adaptations to life in the marine environment

2. Brief historical note on marine biology

3. Biological diversity in the marine environmentEvolutionary and ecological diversification of the main groups of marine organisms; characterization of biological diversity; characteristics of the main groups of marine invertebrates and vertebrates. Evolution from green algae to higher plants. Evolution of animal diversity.

4. Marine biology. Taxonomy of major biological groups; evolution of plant and animal diversity; relevant biological processes (photosynthesis, chemosynthesis, respiration, ingestion, growth, exudation, reproduction, dispersion and mortality); primary and secondary production; light behavior in the water column, the depth distribution of photosynthetically active radiation; systematics, taxonomy, classification and phylogeny of vertebrates and marine invertebrates; structure and functioning of marine trophic networks.
Composition and characterization of unicellular plankton, multicellular plankton and benthos. Relevant biological processes (photosynthesis, chemosynthesis, respiration, ingestion, growth, exudation, reproduction, dispersion and mortality). Primary and secondary production. Behavior of light in the water column, the depth distribution of photosynthetically active radiation.
Systematics, taxonomy, classification and phylogeny of vertebrates and marine invertebrates. Biology of adaptations of aquatic vertebrates (fish, mammals and aquatic birds). Structure and functioning of marine trophic networks. Distribution patterns of planktonic and benthic organisms and temporal variability. Vertical migrations. Plankton roles in the marine environment and global biogeochemical cycles. Effects of natural and anthropogenic environmental changes

5.Physiology of marine animals. Central nervous system and sensory organs; endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems.

Practical Component:



  1. Identification of the main morphological characteristics of different groups of marine organisms.

  2. Field trip – observation of biodiversity, sampling of algae and marine invertebrates.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

Participated expository method, with emphasis on interactive training even in the

introduction of theoretical concepts and through solving exercises in practical classes.

It seeks to lead students to draw conclusions, guiding them in this process or in classes

theoretical as well as in laboratory practices. In laboratory classes, students perform

experimental work, according to the protocols provided, later elaborating the

respective report.

Obtenção de frequência

The evaluation considers the results of the tests or exam (60%) and the laboratory work development component (presentation and discussion of works + face-to-face participation + written work + laboratory work) (40%). The evaluation of both components must be positive (minimum score of 9.5).

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

CF = 60% (theoretical-practical) + 40% (laboratory)
