Objetivos

This subject aims at the study of Spatial Planning (SP) and geographic information (GI).
The SP component has as main objectives:

• Study SP in its multiple aspects, as a scientific discipline, administrative technique and policy that is developed in an interdisciplinary and integrated perspective.

• Explore fundamentals of action in SP, presenting different approaches to territorial planning and management.

• Acquire knowledge of SP support instruments, through the study and integration mechanisms of environmental and landscape variables.

The GI component provides an introduction to the development, terminology and application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS):

• Define nature of GIS and key component of the GI study area.

• Establish relationships between technology, data, methods and organizations in the use of GIS.

• Identify key issues related to design, creation, operation and problems associated with GIS.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

It is intended that the student develops, critical thinking, skills of analysis and problem solving in complex territories, and obtains fundamental knowledge regarding institutions, fundamental legislation and respective planning and ordering instruments in force. It is intended that the student acquire skills in spatial analysis using geographic information systems.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

Classes are theoretical-practical and practical and provide the student with a comprehensive view of the challenges facing territories and provide them with the most recent and innovative methodologies for territory sustainable management and geographic information systems.

The integration of theory with practice is achieved through study visits (face to face and virtual) to ongoing projects in which the student will be confronted with the decisions to be taken in the execution of a work/project with a view to solving real and concrete problems.

Case studies are provided to enhance the ability to recognize and understand needs, with a view to choosing the best techniques and framing projects within the available legislative instruments.

The teaching method is based on workshop-model classroom with a field workshop (theoretical-practical classes), providing an innovative learning environment, simulating a transdisciplinary project team that will work out a real problem and present concrete proposals.

The classes will provide students with skills in practical and field work, oriented to learning-by-doing through problem-solving, stimulating critical thinking.

Non-presential hours will be tutored using the e-learning system.

Continuous assessment based on:
a) Problem-solving through practical exercises.
b) Class frequencies and performance during the semester.
c) group work to solve a territorial problem using GIS

Obtenção de frequência

To obtain frequency in this subjet, the following requirements must be considered:

- Attend the mandatory percentage of TP(OT)/P(GIS) classes in the discipline according to the attendance regime
- Compulsorily carry out the practical work TP (OT) with an average ≥ to 9.5 values.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

I - THEORETICAL COMPONENT

  1. a) Individual assessment of the SP theoretical component by carrying out two tests (100%):

- Conducting the 1st test (50%)

- Conducting the 2nd test (50%)

  1. b) Individual assessment of the theoretical component of GI, best among (100%):

- 30% Laboratories (only for continuous assessment) + 70% Test (GI);

- 100% Test

Assessment of the Theoretical Component of the course (a+b): 2/3 theoretical grade of SP (a) + 1/3 theoretical grade of IG (b). To obtain approval, the average of the tests must be equal to or greater than 9.5 values.

NOTE - Per exam: SP component of the exam + IG component of the exam.

I I - PRACTICAL COMPONENT

  1. a) Assessment of the practical component through group work (100%):
  • Group work with an SP component and a GI component (min. 9.5 average values and min 9.5 values in each component)

Assessment of the practical component: 60% SP + 40% IG

III - Final classification:

  • Final grade of the course: 50% Practical (I) + 50% Theoretical (II)
