Objetivos

The student should be able to understand and apply the fundamental laws of newtonian mechanics, in particular: apply Newton's laws; apply a specific methodology for problem solving; perform experiments and analyse the results obtained; identify deviations from expected results critically.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

At the end of the course unit the student should be able to:
- Represent free body diagrams;
- Know how to apply Newton's first law, in establishing the conditions of equilibrium of particles and rigid bodies;
- Replace a system of forces by a force-couple at a point;
- Calculate reactions in supports and connections of structures;
- Apply the laws of dry friction in problem solving;
- Determine the centroid and center of gravity of surfaces and lines;
- Determine the moment of inertia of composite surfaces;
- Describe the rectilinear and curvilinear motion of particles;
- Apply Newton's 2nd law and establish dynamic equilibrium;
- Prepare experimental activity reports with critical analysis of the results.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

Theoretical-practical lessons: explanatory concepts and principles of the mechanics of particles and rigid bodies followed by problem solving; Laboratory classes: experiments with specific guides and exercises.
Distributed assessment with final examination.

Tipo de avaliação

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Componentes de Avaliação

Designation Peso (%)
Exame 75,00
Trabalho laboratorial 25,00
Total: 100,00

Componentes de Ocupação

Designation Tempo (Horas)
Estudo autónomo 65,00
Frequência das aulas 75,00
Trabalho laboratorial 20,00
Total: 160,00

Obtenção de frequência

Final Grade: NF >= 9.5 val.

Grade of the written component (tests (60% T1 + 40% T2) or exams): CE > 8 val.

In continuous assessment the student must perform at least 4 labs.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

Final Grade = 75% CE + 25% CL

Written component: CE = 60% T1 + 40% T2 or the classification obtained in an exam (normal, resource or special).

T1 and T2 are tests to be carried out during the class period (continuous assessment).

Laboratory component: CL = 80% Average of the 4 best laboratory works + 20% performance in activities led by the group.

The grade of one test can be recovered on the date of the normal season exam.

Avaliação especial (TE, DA, ...)

Students with special statutes must inform the responsable for the unit, at the beginning of the semester, in order to agree on an attendance/monitoring plan for the laboratory classes to allow the application of the assessment rules.

In order to optimize laboratory resources and taking into account that there are several laboratory classes in operation, the request for extraordinary laboratory work under the Student Worker Statute, or others, must be requested in writing to the person responsible for the unit up to one week before performing the Laboratory Work in question.

Observações

In written assessments, only non-programmable scientific calculators may be used.
