Objetivos

The Curricular Unit of Noise Analysis is a specific subject in the field of engineering sciences. Learning the underlying physical methods and concepts aims to develop in students fundamental skills that allow them to understand the sound phenomena (including mechanical vibrations) responsible for sound emissions. On the other hand, also understand the main techniques of recording and sound analysis in order to quantify and control environmental and industrial noise.

The student, at the end of the study in this Curricular Unit, should be able to:
1. Understand/explain the basic concepts of mechanical vibrations;
2. Interpret mechanical systems in free motion and forced motion;
3. Know how to perform isolation from mechanical vibrations;
4. Understand/explain the phenomenon of sound;
5. Know and describe the characteristic magnitudes of a sound;
6. Know and describe the human auditory system;
7. Analyze the sound using measuring equipment (sound meter);
8. Propose solutions to reduce noise;
9. Perform laboratory practices to consolidate and complement the theoretical knowledge taught in the Curricular Unit.

Knowledge of mathematical operations with logarithmic quantities, complex numbers and general physics.

Programa

1. Mechanical Vibrations
1.1. Introduction to mechanical vibrations.
1.2. Simple harmonic motion (frequency, period, amplitude, phase).
1.3. Components of a vibrating system (mass, spring, damper).
1.4. Systems with one degree of freedom: free and forced regime.
1.5. Vibration transmittance and vibration isolation.
1.6. Equipment for measuring vibrations.

2. Acoustics
2.1. Sound. Characteristics and properties: amplitude; frequency; period and wavelength.
2.2. Range of frequencies and amplitude audible by the human ear.
2.3. Pressure, intensity and sound power. Fundamental relations of sound.
2.4. Sound pressure, intensity and power levels. decibel scale.
2.5. Sound spectrum and octave filters. Isophonic curves. Weighting curves: A, B, C and D.
2.6. Noise measuring instruments. sound level meters.
2.7. The human ear. Ear anatomy. Hearing sensitivity. Effects of noise on the human body.
2.8. Room acoustics. Requirements for good acoustics in a concert hall and other enclosed spaces. Reflection and reverberation. absorbers.
2.9. Propagation of sound through air and structures. Sound fields: free; diffuse; near and far. Sound insulation.
2.10. Determination of sound intensity and power: in free field and in diffuse field.
2.11. Industrial noise control. Identification and diagnosis of sound sources. Vibration reduction. silencers. Presentation of practical cases.
2.12. Indications about legislation. General Noise Regulation (GNR). Portuguese Standards.

In the scope of theoretical-practical classes, the teaching methodology used is based on the application of learning techniques aimed at greater involvement and autonomy of students in the construction of their knowledge. Laboratory classes are planned where the student will have the opportunity to carry out the programmed laboratory work.

1- The continuous assessment regime
Students who intend to attend the UC under continuous assessment are required to carry out all assessments of the two components:

- Theoretical-practical component (Tp) is evaluated by two tests (T1 and T2) given by:

            Tp = 0.5xT1 + 0.5xT2

      Restrictions: To take advantage of the Tp component it is necessary that T1 and T2 >= 8.0

- Laboratory component (L) with mandatory completion of two laboratory assignments. The evaluation of the laboratories is composed by the performance in class and the two reports presented referring to the work carried out, one in the area of ​​vibration (L1) and the other on noise (L2). This component is given by the equation:

           L = 0.5xL1 + 0.5xL2

    Note: If you do not perform one of the laboratories, you will have a classification of 0 (zero) values ​​​​in this work.


2- Assessment regime by exams with mandatory laboratory work

Students who choose the assessment system by exams will take a written test called Exam (Ex) where all the material corresponding to the Tp component will be evaluated. Examination tests are carried out at scheduled times at School level.
To be successful in the Ex test it is necessary to have a classification >= 8.0


Note: For any evaluation moment (tests or face-to-face exam), a student may be called to take an oral test, to be arranged, to confirm the knowledge revealed in the summative assessments. The classification of the oral test replaces the classification of the assessment moment in question. If the student does not attend the oral test, without due justification, the assessment in question will be cancelled.

 


Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

Final Grade (FG) under continuous assessment of the UC is given by:
     
     FG = 60% Tp + 40% L
     
          FG - Final Grade
          Tp - Component of Theoretical-Practical Assessment
            L - Laboratory Component

Final Grade (FG) in assessment by exams will be the classification obtained at the time of the exam (Ex) and that obtained in the Laboratory component (L) being given by:

      FG = 60% Ex + 40% L

         FG - Final Grade
         Ex - Exam
           L - Laboratory Component

To obtain approval in the UC, the Final Grade (FG) must be >= 10 values after rounding up to whole value.

If the student has a Final Grade score >= 16, he/she must perform an oral presentation to assign the UC Final Grade. If you do not intend to do it, the Final Grade score will be 15.

Avaliação especial (TE, DA, ...)

In order to comply with the regulation in 'No. 6 Other Exemptions and Benefits' of the 'Student-Worker Statute Regulation', students covered by this regulation must inform the teacher till the end of the second week of lessons of their situation in order to evaluate their implications for UC assessments. Requests received after the second week of classes will not be accepted.
