Objetivos
Provide course students with a first contact with the Energy area.
It is intended that they acquire general knowledge about the different types of energy, what is primary energy, what are renewable energies and what are the main energy conversion technologies. Additionally, it is intended that students acquire skills in the preparation and presentation of work and writing reports on laboratory work.
Resultados de aprendizagem e competências
At the end of the course, students should be able to:- Know what are the primary energy sources;
- Know what are the main sources of renewable energy;
- Know the main energy conversion technologies;
- Identify the areas of activity that consume the most energy;
- Develop critical thinking and analysis regarding the use of energy;
- Effectively communicate the results and conclusions of the work carried out to third parties;
- Be part of a working group and be able to coordinate it.
Modo de trabalho
Presencial
Pré-requisitos (conhecimentos prévios) e co-requisitos (conhecimentos simultâneos)
Enjoy the work in the energy field and have the interest in exploring and deepening knowledge.
Programa
1. The Primary Energy- Types of primary energy; Evolution of production and consumption; Renewable energy.
2. Energy Conversion Technologies- Main energy conversion technologies; Conversion efficiency.
3. Energy production, storage and consumption- Basic examples of system sizing.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem
- Theoretical-Practical Classes (1.5 hours per week): participatory expository method (using a video projector to present the contents, films and exercises) and participatory method (with analysis and discussion of specific situations by students).
In some theoretical-practical classes, presentations will be given by several invited lecturers to introduce specific topics, and a small individual report will be requested on the presentation. Selecting one of the themes presented, it is proposed that groups of 3 to 4 students carry out a research work. The work aims for students to acquire knowledge on the subject, as well as develop skills in group work, writing and presentation of work.
Visits to laboratories will be carried out to observe some energy conversion technologies.
The assessment will be carried out exclusively through the work developed by the students.

Obtenção de frequência
- Attendance at theoretical-practical classes is recommended and valued, but not mandatory;
- Works and reports prepared can be returned for content improvement;
Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final
- Attendance to classes (10%) - Minimum attendance of 60% with linear evolution after this value
- Individual reports about presentations (40%)
- Research team work report (30%)
- Presentation of the research team work to the class (20%)

Avaliação especial (TE, DA, ...)
Students with special statutes must inform the RUC at the beginning of the semester in order to agree a plan for attendance/follow-up to the classes in order to allow the application of the UC evaluation rules.
Melhoria de classificação
The improvement of classification can be carried out during the school term, developing the work with the class.
Observações
- Work reports, individually or in groups, will be returned for improvement, if they have not reached the minimum classification;
- Students who do not have all the reports approved during the continuous assessment period have the possibility to deliver the non-accepted reports by the end of the exam calendar;
- The weekly time for answering questions will be published on the UC page in Moodle.
