Docência - Responsabilidades
Língua de trabalho
Portuguese - Suitable for English-speaking students
Objetivos
The student should be able to understand and apply the fundamental laws of newtonian mechanics, in particular: apply Newton's laws; apply a specific methodology for problem solving; perform experiments and analyse the results obtained; identify deviations from expected results critically.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências
At the end of the course unit the student should be able to:
- Represent free body diagrams;
- Know how to apply Newton's first law, in establishing the conditions of equilibrium of particles and rigid bodies;
- Replace a system of forces by a force-couple at a point;
- Calculate reactions in supports and connections of structures;
- Apply the laws of dry friction in problem solving;
- Determine the centroid and center of gravity of surfaces and lines;
- Determine the moment of inertia of composite surfaces;
- Describe the rectilinear and curvilinear motion of particles;
- Apply Newton's 2nd law and establish dynamic equilibrium;
- Prepare an experimental activity report with critical analysis of the results.

Obtenção de frequência
Continuous evaluation:
The written component (W) is evaluated with two tests (TP1 and TP2, minimum weighted average score of 7 points), and the PL component is evaluated with five lab reports (in which a minimum of 4 are mandatory, plus the group preparation of 1 lab work).
The students will have the opportunity to resit the test TP1 or TP2 on the date of the regular season's exam, upon registration on Moodle; the best score will prevail.
Evaluation in exam's season (regular/supplementary/special):
A single written TP test (W, minimum average score of 7 points), with the PL component being evaluated with the average score of 4 lab reports.
General rule to obtain frequency:
Final Score = 0.75*W + 0.25*PL
Minimum score of 9.5 points (out of 20) for approval
If fraud is detected, the internal correspondent regulations will be applied (Regulamento Disciplinar dos Estudantes do Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal).
Note on the PL works:
Every PL report will be conducted as group work. Each one of these reports may be object of discussion in the end of the semester. The lecturer may inquire the group about the commitment of each group's member during the execution of the report.
The scores of the PL reports (if higher than 9.5 out of 20 points) will be valid for evaluation until the maximum of 1 scholar year.
Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final
Final Score = 75% W + 25% PL
W = 60% TP1 + 40% TP2 or the score obtained in the single test of exam's season (regular, supplementary or special).
TP1 and TP2 are tests to be carried out during the class period (continuous assessment).
PL = (80% Average of the 4 best laboratory reports + 20% performance in activities led by the group (or the average of the 4 laboratory reports developed during exam's season (regular, supplementary or special)).
Avaliação especial (TE, DA, ...)
Students with special statutes must inform the responsible for the unit, at the beginning of the semester, in order to agree on an attendance/monitoring plan for the laboratory classes to allow the application of the assessment rules. In order to optimize laboratory resources and taking into account that there are several laboratory classes in operation, the request for extraordinary laboratory work under the Student Worker Statute, or others, must be requested in writing to the person responsible for the unit up to one week before performing the Laboratory Work in question.
