Objetivos

he Power Electronics Fundamentals course covers the basic principles of electrical energy conversion, which is the process of transforming electrical energy from one form to another, such as from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) or vice versa. Some of the main areas of study include:

• Power Devices: Study of semiconductor devices used to control the flow of electrical currents, such as diodes, thyristors, and transistors, among others.

• Power Electronics Circuits: Analysis of electrical circuits that use power devices to convert electrical energy from one form to another, such as DC-DC converters, AC-DC converters, and inverters, among others.

• Power Electronics Control: Study of control methods used to operate power devices and power electronics circuits efficiently, accurately, and safely.

• Power Electronics Applications: Study of various power electronics applications, such as renewable energy systems, electric motors, and power supplies, among others.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

By the end of this course, students will be able to analyze and interpret electrical schematics of power electronics and understand the various components that allow for control of electrical energy flow and conversion of energy from one form to another, such as transforming electrical energy from direct current to alternating current or vice versa.

Presencial

Pré-requisitos (conhecimentos prévios) e co-requisitos (conhecimentos simultâneos)

Basic knowledge of mathematics.

Programa

Course syllabus:

  1. Introduction to Power Electronics Fundamentals: Context and general concepts.
  2. AC/DC Converters known as rectifiers: convert alternating voltage from the electrical power grid into direct voltage.
  3. DC/DC Converters known as choppers: convert direct voltage into direct voltage.
  4. DC/AC Converters known as inverters: convert direct voltage into alternating voltage, widely used in drives.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

In this course, the theoretical-practical classes aim to encourage active student participation in their own learning process, by promoting the use of their critical thinking skills. During these classes, a part is dedicated to presenting the course syllabus content, always supported by another part dedicated to problem-solving.

The practical laboratory classes aim to allow students to apply the concepts learned in theoretical-practical classes in practical situations.

Tipo de avaliação

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Componentes de Avaliação

Designation Peso (%)
Teste 65,00
Trabalho laboratorial 35,00
Total: 100,00

Componentes de Ocupação

Designation Tempo (Horas)
Estudo autónomo 40,00
Frequência das aulas 30,00
Trabalho laboratorial 30,00
Total: 100,00

Obtenção de frequência

The evaluation is composed of two components, which complement each other:

  1. Four tests (or final exam) (65%, with an average score of 9.5 in the tests (or final exam)) Assessing the learning of concepts and problem-solving skills.
  2. Completion of 4 laboratory works (35%, with a minimum laboratory grade of 9.5).

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

The final grade for the course will be calculated as follows:
- Final exam grade (NE), with a weight of 65%.
- In the case of distributed assessment or tests (NTX), with a weight of 65% similar to the exam.
- Laboratory Works (TL), with a weight of 35%.

The final classification of this UC is calculated by:
NF=0,65NE+0,35TL
or
NF= 0.65(0,1NT1+0,4NT2+0,4NT3+0,1NT4)+0,35TL

Where: NTX corresponds to the classification obtained in tests 1, 2, 3 and 4

The final grade of the discipline (NF) will have a minimum grade of 9.5 Values

Avaliação especial (TE, DA, ...)
