Objetivos

This curricular unit aims to contribute to the general knowledge of engineering materials, namely:
Using the appropriate material for a given application;
Understand the relationship between properties, structure and processing;
Recognize the need to perform innovative design with new materials.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

To know the families of materials used in technology and engineering: metals, polymers, ceramics and composites and the relationship between their properties, structure, processing and performance in service.
To know the main materials used in structural applications in engineering, with special relevance for metals and composites.

1. FUNDAMENTALS
-Types of materials used in engineering
- Chemical bonding. Strong bonds :covalent, ionic and metallic. Weak bonds
- Amorphous and crystalline solids
- Atomic packing in crystals, polymers and glasses. Density
- Crystalline structures. Crystallographic indices
- Notion of polycrystal. Grain and grain boundaries
- Crystalline defects: point, linear and two-dimensional
- Phase diagrams.
2. METALS
- Iron and steel. Fe-C diagram. Phase transformations with diffusion and the martensitic transformation. Microstructure of steel. Effect of alloying elements.
- Non-ferrous alloys.
3.MATERIAL PROPERTIES AND TESTS
4. HEAT TREATMENTS
Thermodynamic and metallurgical aspects
- TTT diagrams. Effect of alloying elements

Obtenção de frequência

Continuous assessment consists of - test and written work - and ten laboratory assignments. The evaluation can also be done through final exam on all the subjects taught.

Test on partial contents and written work, with a weight of 70% in the final classification, and students can not have an average grade lower than 9.5 points.
Laboratory reports (in groups), focusing on materials testing, with a weight of 30% in the final classification.
The final classification of the continuous assessment is obtained as follows:
Final mark= 70% average grade (Test + written work) + 30% Laboratory Note.

Final exam with a weight of 100%, students cannot have a grade lower than 9.5.

L : report average

undelivered items count as zero in the calculation

Provas e trabalhos especiais

Working Students, Federated Athletes, Student's Unions Leaders  and Students under the Law of Religious Freedom must contact the  professor until the end of the second week to present their relevant specificities, as provided for in the respective diplomas.
