Língua de trabalho

Portuguese - Suitable for English-speaking students

Objetivos

The student should be able to understand and apply the fundamental laws of newtonian mechanics, in particular: apply Newton's laws; apply a specific methodology for problem solving; perform experiments and analyse the results obtained; identify deviations from expected results critically.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

At the end of the course unit the student should be able to:
- Represent free body diagrams;
- Know how to apply Newton's first law, in establishing the conditions of equilibrium of particles and rigid bodies;
- Replace a system of forces by a force-couple at a point;
- Calculate reactions in supports and connections of structures;
- Apply the laws of dry friction in problem solving;
- Determine the centroid and center of gravity of surfaces and lines;
- Determine the moment of inertia of composite surfaces;
- Describe the rectilinear and curvilinear motion of particles;
- Apply Newton's 2nd law and establish dynamic equilibrium;
- Prepare experimental activity reports with critical analysis of the results.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

Theoretical-practical lessons (TP): explanatory concepts and principles of the mechanics of particles and rigid bodies followed by problem solving.
Pratical-laboratorial classes (PL): experiments with specific guides and exercises.

Distributed evaluation without final exam.

Minimum score of 9.5 points (out of 20) for approval

Continuous evaluation:

The written component (W) is evaluated with two tests (TP1 and TP2, minimum weighted average score of 7 points), and the PL component is evaluated with five PL reports (in which a minimum of 4 are mandatory, meaning that the report with the lowest score will not be considered for the calculation of the average score of the PL reports).

The students will have the opportunity to resit the test TP1 or TP2 on the date of the regular season's exam, upon registration on Moodle; the best score will prevail.

Final Score = 0.45*TP1 + 0.30*TP2 + 0.25*(average of PL reports)

Note on attendance:
Students must participate in 70% or more of the PL classes in order to be evaluated in this component; justification for missed classes must be sent to the module leader. If this participation is not achieved, the student will score 0 points in the PL component.

Students scoring lower than 7 points in both TP tests and/or lacking evaluation on the PL component will be automatically transferred to evaluation in exam's season (see below).

Evaluation in exam's season (regular/supplementary/special):

A single written TP test (W, minimum average score of 7 points), composed of the topics on the 2 TP tests, with the PL component being evaluated with the average score of 4 lab reports.

Final Score = 0.75*W + 0.25*PL

Notes on PL works:

Every PL report will be conducted as group work. Each one of these reports may be object of discussion in the end of the semester. The lecturer may inquire the group about the commitment of each group's member during the execution of the report.

Students who missed the PL class where the laboratory work has been developed are not allowed to participate in the respective report; if such students are included, the classification for that group will be 0.

Non-original reports (totally or partially), duplicated from published materials (papers, books of web pages) will be invalidated. Duplicated reports among the class will also be invalidated, with the authors immediately summoned for a discussion of the contents.

The scores of the PL reports (if higher than 9.5 out of 20 points) will be valid for evaluation until the maximum of 1 scholar year; therefore, students with valid PL evaluation from 22/23 are dismissed from attendance monitoring in PL classes.

Working students (and students in other special regimes described in ESTSetúbal/IPS rules), with verified status, will have the opportunity to complete the PL works during the regular exam's season, upon agreement with the lecturers of this curricular unit. These students are also dismissed from attendance monitoring in PL classes.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

Minimum of 9.5 (out of 20) for approval

Continuous evaluation:

75% TP tests + 25% PL reports

Exam (regular/supplementary/special):

75% Written component + 25% Pratical component

Avaliação especial (TE, DA, ...)

Students with special statutes must inform the responsable for the unit, at the beginning of the semester, in order to agree on an attendance/monitoring plan for the laboratory classes to allow the application of the assessment rules.

In order to optimize laboratory resources and taking into account that there are several laboratory classes in operation, the request for extraordinary laboratory work under the Student Worker Statute, or others, must be requested in writing to the person responsible for the unit up to one week before performing the Laboratory Work in question.
