Objetivos

Provide the basic concepts and encourage a taste for the study of HVAC and Refrigeration.

Provide students with basic knowledge of psychrometrics and know how to apply this knowledge to the most common climate control situations.

Provide the student with the theoretical and practical concepts necessary to study the various types of refrigeration machines, as well as carry out their dimensioning.

Know how to calculate, size and interpret HVAC and refrigeration systems and equipment.

Presencial

Pré-requisitos (conhecimentos prévios) e co-requisitos (conhecimentos simultâneos)

Sustained knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat and mass transmission.

Programa

Chap.1 - Thermodynamics Revisions. Reviews of the main concepts of thermodynamics. Thermodynamic properties. 1st law of thermodynamics aplyed to closed and open systems. Massic and energetic balances. 

Chap.2 – Psychometry. Mixture of air and water vapor. Moist air. Wet air properties, wet and dry bulb temperature, relative humidity and specific humidity, enthalpy and specific volume. 


Chap.3 – One-story, two-story and waterfall refrigeration cycles. Theoretical and real cycles for refrigeration production, Mollier diagram (T-s, P-h), characteristic parameters of the cycle, refrigerating efficiency and COP, isentropic compressor efficiency, refrigerating effect and refrigerating power, compression power.

Cap.4 – Refrigerating equipment. Types of compressors, their classification and operating principles. Condensers, Evaporators and Expansion Devices. Auxiliary and safety equipment. Control equipment. Cooling fluids. 

Chap.5 - Perishable products. Characteristics, refrigeration, freezing and conservation. Constitution of food. Operating temperatures. Storage conditions. Cold rooms and Cooling Tunnels.

Continuous assessment (to be carried out during the term):

- Two tests (70%) - Minimum score for each test 9.0V (with the possibility of recovery); Minimum arithmetic mean: 9.5V

- Laboratory work (30%) - Mandatory

- If the student does not obtain the minimum grade in one of the tests, he/she can recover on the date of the recovery test.
