This curricular unit aims to provide students with the skills to develop a biotechnological project, including the development of a process diagram, the determination of the mass and energy balances, the selection and sizing of equipment, and to estimate flow rates and characteristics of effluents generated, as well as the control points of the instrumentation system. The student must be able to perform an analysis of the economic viability and sensitivity of the project and acquire basics on the evaluation of industrial risks and plan actions to improve the safety of plants and people.
Seminars:
1.1 Analysis of the viability of the project and its expected profitability, including the identification of critical parameters for return on investment and profitability sensitivity analysis on its variation, concluding with the degree of risk of the project on the basis of this analysis.
1.2 Industrial hygiene based on the evaluation of indoor air quality and working conditions. Basic Principles for ventilation. Good habits.
1.3 Safety prevention and emergency management. Risk assessment models (FMEA, HAZOP, etc.). Emergency plan.
Theoretical-Practical Classes:
3.1 Licensing and technology transfer in the chemical and biotechnological industry.
3.2 Patents.
4.1 Preliminary mass balance and process flow diagram blocks.
4.2 Combined mass and energy balance using commercial simulators.
4.3 Calculation memorial.
4.4 Equipment sizing.
4.5 Troubleshooting in installations.
5. Analysis of the economic-financial feasibility of the project and its profitability.
In the classes the fundamental concepts are lectured using audiovisual media techniques and illustrative real applications of these concepts are solved. Additionally, these classes will be used for the monitoring of the projects of each group and elucidation of specific questions about each project. Seminars about relevant specific themes will be available, normally presented by specialists in the field. The evaluation in this CU will be only a continuous one and will be supported in the development of a project of a particular biotechnological industry, which will be made in groups of 3 to 4 students. The final evaluation of each student is obtained conjugating two distinct pathways:
- 30% of the evaluation will be based on the performance of the student throughout the semester. The evaluation will be composed by several components such as utilization of acquired knowledge obtained during the course, problem solving ability, student contribution to the project elaboration, etc.
- 70% of the evaluation will be based in the project presentation (written and oral English language), oral discussion of the work and project quality. This evaluation is established by the teacher responsible for the curricular unit and other teachers of the CU.Designation | Peso (%) |

Final grade = 30% Performance + 70% Project
In terms of individual assessment of the group work, it is indicated that:
- Even if the student has signed the work, a null classification can be attributed to the student who does not appear in the oral presentation and discussion, or others considered relevant by the CUR.
- Students in the same group can be given a different classification, based on the performance of each element throughout the semester and the presentation and oral discussion of the project, considering the mastery of the content of the work carried out.
