Objetivos

The objective of this curricular unit is to increase the knowledge about the basic functional unit of all living beings – the cell, in terms of its composition, dynamic and functioning.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

The students should know and comprehend molecular and cellular events intrinsic to the functioning, regulation and cellular differentiation, and they should acquire the capacity to have a global perspective of the working of cells and consequently of living organism. It is intended that the students acquire knowledge and be able to apply basic experimental methodologies of molecular biology.

  1. Biomembranes: transport systems, signal transduction and membrane receptors.

  2. Overview of the structure and function of proteins

  3. Physico-chemical structure of nucleic acids. Expression of the genetic information, RNA synthesis (transcription) and processing. Protein synthesis (translation). Maintenance of the genetic information. DNA replication and repair. Recombination. Mitosis and meiosis. Molecular mechanisms of homologous recombination. Detection, tipes and effects of mutations.

  4. Mobile genetic elements (virus, transposons and plasmids). Recombinant DNA technology. Regulation of gene expression.



  1. Genomic organization, gene and non-coding sequences, chromosomal structure and morphology

  2. Molecular control of the cell cycle. Cell division. stem cell lines and formation of gametes. Regulatory process of programmed cell death, necroses and apoptosis.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

This curricular unit is organized in two parts, a theoretical component and a practical one. Presentation of the theoretical content will be done with the help of powerpoint support. The syllabus contents will be presented to the students, to help him attain a profound knowledge of functioning of a cell. The practical component will allow the students to acquire basic competencies to do and analyze the results of laboratory procedures in the context of molecular biology. In this component, series of practical exercises will be resolved, that contextualize with relevant aspects of laboratory and real life situations. In terms of evaluation, a higher weight is given to the understanding of the syllabus contents, being the practical application accounted for the grade.
In the current pandemic situation, the theoretical classes will be conducted via zoom conference, while practical classes will be done in person, whenever possible.

Obtenção de frequência

In a pre-COVID context, attending classes (maximum of 20% of unjustified absences) was required as access condition to the continuous assessment regime. Attendence is still recomended.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

Continuous assessment: 
FG= 85% (Test1 +Test2)/2 + 10% Group Work (Molec. Biol.) + 5% (Participation in classroom activities)

Exam (1st and 2nd) 
FG = 100 % Exam OR  Exam + components of continuous assessment (90 % Exam + 10% Work )

Special Exams:
FG = 100 % Exam OR  Exam + components of continuous assessment (90 % Exam + 10% Work )

Observations: Whenever tests/exams are carried out online, the grade may be confirmed through an oral test, for all students. If the student fails to attend the oral evaluation, the classification of that test/exam will be 0.
For final grades equal to or greater than 16, a confirmatory oral test may be required, and in case of non-attendance the final grade will be 15.

Observações

In the current academic year, at the beginning of the semester, the UC's mode of operation was 100% distance learning, due to the imposition of confinement measures and social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Theoretical classes were lectured online the whole semester.

In the current COVID context, a minimum attendance of 80% of the T and TP classes was not imposed, but recomended . 

Observations for remote assessment:
Whenever the moments of assessment of tests/exams are not presential, the possibility of an oral test of defense of grade was imposed on all students, with the cancellation of the classification of this element of assessment, in case of no-show, being foreseen ( unjustified absence) in the oral test.
