Objetivos
Provide students with an integrated education of cell and tissue technology, based on fundamental concepts of Cellular and Molecular Biology, Genetics, Immunology and bio-process, with applications in human and veterinary medicine.

1 - Introduction to Animal and Tissue technology: history; differences between animal cells and microorganisms; examples of animal cells applications in commercial production
2 - Basics concepts on Animal Cells: typical structure of animal cells; type of cellular cultures; cellular growth and propagation; cryopreservation; storage; quality control and safety; principal cell lines used in the industry; insect cells
3 - Cloning and heterologous expression in animal cells: genetic flow of information and molecular cloning; elements that are needed for the genetic expression in eukaryotic cells; heterologous expression systems in animal cells; viral DNA vectors; viral RNA vectors; baculovirus; plasmidic vectors; cells lines in biotechnological processes; expression in animal cells; DNA transfection in animal cells; selection markers
4 - Cell Metabolism and its control: energy sources; metabolic bioproducts; factors affecting the cellular metabolism
5 - Post-translational modification of recombinant proteins6 - Mechanisms of cells proliferation and death
7 - Culture media for animal cells
8 - Bioreactors for animal cells: bioreactors project and operation; cellular kinetics; modelling; monitorization and control of cell cultures
9 - Animal cells separation and purification methods
10 - Cells therapy and stem cells
11 - Gene therapy: case study – adenoviral vectors production (for vaccination and gene therapy)
12 - Tissue Microfabrication.

The teaching methodologies rely on a dynamic basis of theoretical/practical classes wherein lectures will be given to present the concepts regarding the syllabus, via PowerPoint slides. Practical applications will intercalate, in which case studies will be presented, analysed, studied and discussed, by the students under the supervision of the teacher.
For the Academic year 2020-2021, the classes may be performed remotely or presentially.
