Programa

  1. Introduction to heterogeneous catalysis and catalysts. Properties of the catalysts, their importance and applications.

  2. Heterogeneous-catalysts: catalyst types, physico-chemical, textural and functional characterization. Catalytic activity and selectivity. Zeolites: properties, applications and more structures of the zeolites used industrially.

  3. Kinetics of heterogeneous catalytic reactions: Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Eley-Rideal mechanisms. Calculating the speed of reactions and kinetic constants. Diffusion and reaction in a catalyst.

  4. Heterogeneous reactors: general characteristics of heterogeneous catalytic reactors, types and applications. Sizing considerations.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

The theoretical material is presented using PowerPoint slides in a dynamic and interactive way with students, interspersed with practical application exercises to strengthen the theoretical content acquisition, acquired in theoretical/practical classes. Also, group laboratory work will be developed, where the acquired knowledge can be applied, e.g. in the synthesis and characterization of catalysts.

Material will be available for consultation on taught subjects in Moodle.

Continuous assessment:

- 2 tests, 40% each.

- 1 laboratory work: 10%.
- 1 Written work (monograph): 10%

Assessment by final exam in 1st or 2nd call (100%).
