Objetivos

At the end of the course, students are expected to understand and know the theoretical foundations: microorganisms and their diversity; the kinetics and energy of bacterial growth and cell death; the effect of environmental factors and anti-microbial agents in the control of microbial growth; the basic mechanisms underlying the adaptability and proliferation of microorganisms in different habitats. It should also learn theoretical and practical knowledge about the different types of microbial analysis, applicable standards depending on the type of sample and/or analysis. The student must also be able to apply, in the laboratory context, the knowledge
previous ones, knowing how to work safely and following the rules of asepsis, knowing how to prepare the culture media appropriate to each type of microorganism, to know methods of sterilization, disinfection and decontamination, to carry out microscopic examinations, perform sample collection and preparation, master sample dilution techniques and
innoculation, know microbial identification methods in food, water and air.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

In theoretical classes, expository and interrogative techniques are used, stimulating students' reasoning and critical spirit through individual work. In laboratory classes, students carry out experimental work to train microbial analysis techniques and make reports to develop critical thinking, debate and group work.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

Evaluation in the academic period:

25% Test 1 + 25% Test 2 + 10% Work 1 + 10% Work 2 + 10% Work 3 + 10% Work 4 + 10% Work 5.

Exam (all seasons):

50% Exam + 10% Work 1 + 10% Work 2 + 10% Work 3 + 10% Work 4 + 10% Work 5.

Works 1 to 4 are reports of practical activities carried out, in groups of 3 to 4 elements, in practical laboratory classes.

- Work 5 is a work of bibliographic research on various topics, related to the various study areas of Microbiology, bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology and algology, carried out in groups and with oral presentation (the weight for oral presentation / discussion is 50%). Students in the same group may be given a different classification based on the quality of the oral presentation and the mastery of the topic.

- The submission of Works 1 to 5 is mandatory to obtain approval.
