Objetivos
It is intended that the student learns the following topics:
- Analyze simple isostatic structures for static actions and calculation of forces and reactions.
- Differentiation of the different types of structures: articulated structures and reticulated structures.
- Know the different types of actions and understand the behavior of structures.
- Focus the most important aspects regarding the execution of concrete and steel structures.
- Understand the mechanics applicable to soils and the concepts on which it is based.
- Recognize and deal with problems associated with the design of geotechnical structures in the monitoring phases of the work.
Resultados de aprendizagem e competências
Lessons theoretical-practical, including some laboratory classes in some subjects. Initial classes of each chapter expose the fundamentals to understand the subjects, with the help of slides and other documentation. In the remaining classes, students will solve specific cases, either individually or in group.
Learning of the generic concepts of equilibrium and statics of the particle and the rigid body, in order to allow the calculation of stresses of simple reticulated structures. The global concept of the safety philosophy of structures is presented, in order to understand the different actions, and the constructive aspects related to the construction of structures with the different types of structural materials are referred to.
Regarding Geotechnics, the basic concepts in soil mechanics are presented and some types of current geotechnical works are presented. In this component, learning is accompanied, in some subjects, by laboratory classes.
With this Unit, the student will have the necessary skills to understand simple structures, understand the safety philosophy that underlies structural analysis, have an introduction to soil behavior and learn about some construction systems for structures and geotechnical works, and be prepared it for a construction monitoring environment.

Programa
The program is based on the following points:
- Static of the particle. Forces in the plane and in space. Resulting from a system of forces. Material point balance. Free body diagram.
- Rigid bodies. Moment of a force about a point. Moment of a force about an axis. Reduction of a force system to a force-couple system. Equivalent force systems. Equilibrium of rigid bodies. Free body diagram. External reactions. Type of supports.
- Analysis of isostatic structures. Analysis of the indeterminancy of structures: exterior, interior and global. Types of loading: concentrated and distributed loads. Truss analysis. Nodes method. Sections method. Analysis of reticulated structures. Beam analysis. Stress diagrams.
- Structural systems and structural safety. Evolution of structural systems in civil engineering. Examples of structural systems in buildings, bridges, tunnels and dams. Actions in structures: permanent and variable. Combinations of actions. Structural safety principles. Notion of limit states. Dimensioning of sections of parts subjected to axial or pure bending.
- Construction, rehabilitation and reinforcement of structures. Elements of a structural design. Interpretation and analysis of project drawings. Constructive aspects. Discussion and analysis.
- Soil mechanics in civil engineering. Fundamentals of Geology. Constitution of soils. Basic properties of soils. Particle size analysis and consistency limits. Soil classification. Soil compaction.
- The principle of effective stresses. Stress state in soils. Elementary notions of settlements and soil shear resistance.
- Application of concepts of mechanics of geotechnical structures and fundamentals of safety verification to geotechnical design. Presentation of the most frequent geotechnical structures: walls and direct foundations. Reference to tunnels, deep excavations, indirect foundations, dams and landfills.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem
Presentation of classes using PowerPoint slides, which are provided at the beginning of the week in a pdf file to students. The theoretical presentation of each theme is followed by examples with exercises solved in class and, in some themes, followed by laboratory classes. Autonomous resolution of other exercises are also required.
