Objetivos

At the end of the curricular unit, students are expected to have the ability to:
- Understand the principles of classification and the diversity of organisms;
- Detail structural and functional aspects of different types of cells - prokaryotes and eukaryotes (animals and plants);
- Understand the morphological organization of animal and plant tissues and organs;
- Deal with cytochemical and plant and animal tissue preparation techniques for observation at optical microscope.

Programa

Theoretical Component:
1. Concept of living beings and cell theory;
2. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells;
3. Plasma membrane and membrane transport;
4. Organization of the eukaryotic cell and functional aspects of the main organelles: endomembrane system (endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complex and lysosomes), cytoskeleton, ribosomes, mitochondria and nucleus;
5. Plant cell
5.1. structure and composition of the primary wall, middle lamella and secondary wall;
5.2. main types of plastids and their functions;
6. Plant histology - morphology and function of plant tissues (meristems, parenchyma, chlorophyllin parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma, phloem, xylem, epidermis and peridermis).
7. Animal histology - morphology and function of animal tissues (epithelial tissues and glands, connective tissues, muscle tissue, nervous tissue).

Practical Component:
1. Microscopic observation of different structures and phenomena: prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, membrane transport phenomena, and plastids; 2. Cytochemical techniques in plant cells and tissues and in animal cells and tissues; 3. Extraction, separation and quantification of photosynthetic pigments.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

In the theoretical classes a participatory-expository teaching methodology will be employed, as well as the debate within the group of students. In the laboratory classes students will be asked to perform an experiment of which they will have to write a report. Those classes will also have a period for discussion of the experiment with the students at the end.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

Continuous evaluation:

CF = 45% Test + 10% work 1 + 10% work 2 + 15% work 3 + 10% work 4 + 10% in-class assessment.

- All assessment elements (test and works) are mandatory.

Minimum grade of 8 must be obtained in the Test.

Assessment by Exam (all periods):

CF = 55% Exam + 10% work 2 + 10% work 3 + work 4 + 10% in-class assessment

Minimum grade of 8 must be obtained in the Exam.

100% Exam not applicable (UC with exception regime) because it is not possible to do the laboratory component in the exam period.

Melhoria de classificação

Follows the Regulamento das Atividades Académicas".

Observações

Rationale for the exception regime (100% Exam not applicable):

The learning objective that underpins the application of the Exception Regime includes mastery of optical microscopy and cytochemical techniques and training in experimental laboratory activities for handling biological samples.

According to the UC file, the skills to be acquired that support the application of the Exception Regime are the following:

1. The student must be able to apply theoretical knowledge in a laboratory context.
2. The student must know how to work with equipment that allows the observation and study of the characteristics of organisms, such as a microscope and binocular magnifying glass; apply staining techniques and manipulate organisms or samples obtained from organisms.

Justification for applying the exception regime:

The practical activities to be developed aim to acquire laboratory skills, practical applications and interpretation of results. The technical skills associated with the execution of these experiences imply the student's face-to-face involvement and continuous assessment of learning.
