Objetivos

At the end of the curricular unit, students must achieve as main goals:

  1. a) To understand the principles of classification and diversity of living organisms
  2. b) To detail structural and functional aspects of cell biology
  3. c) To distinguish the basic principles of cell metabolism plants and animals
  4. d) To understand the fundamentals of cell cycle checkpoints
  5. e) To understand the fundamentals of hereditary
f) To mastering optical microscopy techniques and cytochemistry

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

It is expected that students develop skills in the field of General Biology that allow them to develop their professional activity using any biological system as model, namely:

Being able of characterizing and distinguishing prokaryotic and eukaryotic living cells and vegetal and animal systems.

Being able of characterizing and distinguishing the different life cycles and the mechanisms of hereditary as well as the main energetic exchanges established between living beings and the environment

Theoretical Component: 1. Cell Theory and definitions; 2. Organization of the eukaryotic cell; 3. Specific Organels; 4. Main types of plastids and their respective functions; 5. Endomembrane system: morphofunctional relationships between endoplasmic reticulum, complex of Golgi and lysosomes; 6. The cytoskeleton; 7. Core, Regulation of Cell Cycle and Apoptosis, 8. Human Cells Specialized: Muscle fiber, neuron, gametes.

Practical Component: 1. Microscopic observation of different structures and phenomena; 1.1. Prokaryotic cells and eukaryotes, plastids: Reserve Chloroplasts, Movements Brownians, 1.2.Membrane Transport Phenomena;

1.3. Plant cell walls and marking techniques;

1.4.Chromosomes and mitosis;

  1. Extraction, separation and quantification of photosynthetic pigments;
  2. in vitro Cell cultures techniques.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

The teaching methodologies are based on the expository-participatory method, in the theoretical component, with resources from audiovisuals and moments of class discussion. The practical component is of a laboratory nature, based on the recourse to the experimental method.

Type of Assessment: Distributed assessment with final exam

Attendance Conditions: Attendance to practical classes must be greater than or equal to 80%.

Obtenção de frequência

In continuous assessment, the score in the Test  must be equal to or greater than 9.5 values. The remaining assessment elements (Regular exercises, Work 1 and Work 2) do not have a minimum grade and the student has 0 values if they do not deliver the work. Work 1 is a group report on one of the practical activities carried out during laboratory practical classes. Work 2 is a poster based on a theme to be developed by the students to be exposed, for example, in the Course Days;

During exam periods, the exam grade must be equal to or greater than 9.5 values. Regular exercises are quizzes carried out in class
