Objetivos

The curricular unit of Urban Hydraulic Works aims to transmit specific knowledge in the areas of conception, design, and project of urban hydraulic structures and works. Advanced knowledge will also be transmitted in the field of urban river integration, of LIDs (Low Impact Devices), and other management measures, and of urban floods prevention and mitigation, thus enabling specific engineering knowledge in the field of urban floods.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

This curricular unit aims to ensure that future professionals are deeply aware of the areas covered. These professionals should be able to solve the challenges of this field of expertise in a structured, rigorous way and to address civil engineering problems in a multidisciplinary manner, framing them in their technical-scientific, economic, social, and environmental contexts. They should be able to communicate rationally the results of their work to the technical community and society at large, enhance leadership, entrepreneurship, and teamwork skills, taking into account economic contexts and international competitiveness. The contents, which focus on various types of works and hydraulic structures in the urban environment (e.g., sewage networks, hydraulic passages) allow achieving the learning objectives of the curricular unit. The strong component of content focused on the problem of urban floods, which includes aspects from the design of engineering solutions to the evaluation of solutions already implemented, meets the objectives of the curricular unit in this theme. The contents form a coherent whole because they allow to frame, from the perspective of the civil engineer, the different aspects of the water urban cycle with particular relevance to the profession.

Programa

  1. Introduction. Urban hydraulic systems. Urbanization and its consequences on hydraulic systems.

  2. Analysis, control, evaluation, and rehabilitation of urban water systems. Water supply systems. Domestic, commercial, and industrial wastewater drainage systems. Rainwater drainage systems.

  3. Integration of rivers in urban areas. Examples, possible solutions, and their problems and advantages. Integration into the urban landscape. Computational modeling of hydrodynamics. Materials and design solutions.

  4. Urban low-impact development. Planning and evaluation of possible solutions. Rainwater control devices. Evaluation of the performance of implemented solutions.

  5. Management, prevention, and mitigation of urban floods. National and international legislation. Delimitation of potentially flooded zones. Assessment and classification of flood risks.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

Theoretical and theoretical-practical classes with the exposition of relevant materials to contents, discussion of practical cases, elaboration of computational models, and discussion of practical cases. Tutorial classes with support to students in carrying out practical work Due to the pandemic situation, whenever classes move to the online scheme, the Ms. Teams platform will be used for synchronous classes and assessments. In the case of online assessments (tests or exams) for validation of grades, oral tests may be performed for all students, with the final classification in the test and/or examination corresponding to that of that oral test.

Approval is obtained when the weighted average of the assessment compositions is greater than 9.5. The assessment components consist of the performance of two evaluation tests, with a weighting of 20% each, and two hands-on reports, with a weighting of 30% each.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

CF = 0,2 T1 + 0,2 T2 + 0,3 R1 + 0, 3 R3

where
CF = Final grade
T1 = 1st assessment test
T2 = 2nd assessment test
R1 = 1st hands-on case study report
R2 = 2nd hands-on  case study report
