Objetivos

It is intended that students acquire skills in the area
of industrial electrochemistry related to the production
of various chemical products and treatment of waste waters
and hazardous effluents, using various electrochemical
tools and techniques. It is also intended that students
develop knowledge that allows updating and progress in the
application areas of industrial electrochemistry.

Programa

  1. Industrial electrochemistry: general concepts, the cost of electrolytic processes, electrolysis parameters, principles of cell design, laboratory data and scale-up.

  2. The chloro-alkali industry: general concepts of brine electrolysis, modern technological developments, the production of potassium hydroxide.

  3. The extraction, refining and production of metal: electrowinning, cementation, electrorefining, etc.

  4. Inorganic electrolytic processes: fluorine, sodium chlorate and sodium bromate, peroxides and their salts, potassium permanganate, etc.

  5. Organic electrosynthesis: hydrodimerization processes, indirect electrosynthesis.

  6. Water purification, effluent treatment and recycling of industrial streams: metal ion removal and metal recovery, electrodialysis, treatment of chromium content solutions, electrolytic method of phase separation, FDG, etc.

  7. Metal finishing and metal and materials processing.

  8. Electrochemical sensors and monitoring techniques.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

This CU comprises a theoretical and a theoretical-practical
component. The theoretical component is taught in
expository mode, through presentations with computer
support of applications such as PowerPoint or another.
The theoretical-practical component is achieved through
the resolution of theoretical-conceptual, numerical and
application exercises. In addition, students will develop
a research and development mini-project on a topic related
to industrial electrolysis.

During the frequency period, the evaluation of the UC will
assume a quasi continuous nature, comprising the completion
of 2 written tests with a total weight of 60% in the final
evaluation and a mini-project of research and development,
with a global weight of 30% in the final evaluation.
The remaining 10% will be allocated to small assignments
(exercises) done outside the classroom.

In any exam period, the assessment comprises a written test
with a weight of 60% in the final assessment, with the
additional 40% coming from the practical part of the
frequency period, or with a weight of 100%.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

Evaluation at the end of the school term:

CF = 30% T1 + 30% T2 + 30% TP + 10% TC

T1, T2: written tests on parts of the taught content;
TP: Research and development work, with presentation and
discussion with the professor and colleagues
TC: work done outside the classroom.

Exam (all seasons):
CF = 60% E+ 30% TP + 10% TC or 100% E

E: exam score

Pass is achieved with CF > 9.5.
The required minimum score in any of the evaluation
elements.
