Objetivos

In this curricular unit, it is intended that students acquire skills to elaborate representative models of the operation and functioning of processes in the chemical and biotechnology industry, allowing the students to analyze and predict about the mode of operation of such systems. Based on this analysis the students should be able to critically optimize the operation of these processes, using for that purpose an array of tools ranging from simple spreadsheets to specific software.

Programa

1. Nature and organization of optimization problems in Chemical and Biotechnology processes. 2. Basic concepts applied to industry. 3. Linear programming optimization in Chemical and Biotechnology processes: general concepts; the simplex method; linear programming software. 4. Nonlinear programming in Chemical and Biotechnology processes: Application with univariate and multivariable problems. Application without restrictions and with restrictions. Nonlinear programming software. 5. Integrated planning, scheduling, and control in the process industries. 6. Applications to practical problems: design of a small heat exchanger network, real-time optimization of a distillation column, chemical reactor design and operation, etc.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

Classes involve exposure of the theoretical contents. Applications of these contents are made by using specific examples and using computer systems with appropriate software. Small tasks for students are proposed to consolidate the acquired knowledge. The resolution of proposed exercises is solved individually or in small groups.

The continuous evaluation will be comprised activities one test  and one group work. These works involve computers with appropriate software and it will be mandatory the delivery of written reports and oral presentations (English language).

The non-continuous evaluation shall be made by a written final exam, being considered in the final grade the evaluation of group works.
