Objetivos

The main objective of the course is that the students achieve the ability to design reinforced concrete structures, such as beams, columns and slabs. The students have to be able to understand the concepts related to safety formats
applied to materials and actions, required to the correct design of every structure. 

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

The students have to understand all the procedures associated to ultimate limit states and serviceability limits of beams, columns and slabs' design and detailing.

Presencial

Pré-requisitos (conhecimentos prévios) e co-requisitos (conhecimentos simultâneos)

Students should demonstrate skills related to the analysis of isostatic structures and material resistance.

Programa

Chapter 1 - 7,0 weeks
Design of concrete beams to Ultimate Limit States. Design and detail to flexure, shear and torsion. Webs and flanges reinforcement of T-sections. Deviation forces. Reinforcement detailing. Plastic analysis: stress redistribution and ductility.
Chapter 2 - 2,5 weeks
Design of concrete columns. Ultimate Limit State due to bending with compression and to biaxial bending. Detailing of concrete columns. Frame corners.
Chapter 3 - 1,5 weeks
Serviceability Limit State. Cracking and deflection control. Control without direct calculation according to EC2.
Chapter 4 - 4,0 weeks
Design of concrete slabs: design models and detailing. Safety check to shear and torsion. Reinforcement at the free edges, Corner reinforcement, reinforcement in continuous borders. Stress redistribution. Maximum load of slabs 
supported on beams. Local forces applied to slabs and openings: design models and detailing. Flat slabs: design models for vertical and horizontal actions. Punching.
Serviceability limit states of slabs.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

Topics are presented, with emphasis on the most relevant aspects, followed by the resolution, by students, of practical cases.

In order to consolidate their learning, students are submitted to two group projects: design of a beam and a panel of slabs.

At the end of the semester, the test of a reinforced concrete beam is carried out on laboratory.

The teacher supports the student in the development of different tasks throughout the semester.

The assessment consists of several activities carried out throughout the semester, corresponding to the assessment

Continuous assessment with a minimum mandatory attendance of 80%

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

Continuous assessment:

NF = 60% RE (average of the 5 regular exercises) + 15% TM (average of assignments done in Moodle) + 25% IP (average of two individual projects).

Minimum grade of the average of the 5 regular exercises: 8.0 val.

Assessment by Exam:

NF = 75% Exam + 25% IP (average of two individual projects).

Minimum exam grade: 9.5 val.

Grades higher than 16 require an oral exam

UC with exceptional evaluation - 100% evaluation by exam is not applicable.Grades higher than 16 require an oral exam
