Marine Biology

LTAM02 - ECTS

- To understand the main concepts associated with the ecology of marine and estuarine ecosystems

- To acquire knowledge about the structure and functioning of marine and estuarine ecosystems, including biological processes and interactions with the physical and chemical environment

- To know about the evolutionary origins and biology of the main groups of marine organisms and integrate this knowledge in addressing functional issues of adaptation of organisms;

- To identify the morphological characteristics of the main aquatic taxonomic groups, evolutionary relationships and adaptations to the marine environment;

- To know the main taxonomic classification systems

- To develop the ability to carry out scientific work

Ecology and Nature Conservation

LTAM04 - ECTS

Goals
- Acquire Ecology concepts, considering the environment and the quality of human life.
- To be able to act in a more informed and effective way in solving or preventing environmental problems.
- Be able to analyze and study terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
- Know the different tools to protect species, habitats, nature conservation and preserve biodiversity.

Mathematics I

LTAM01 - ECTS
The aim of the Mathematics I curricular unit is to provide students the basic mathematical knowledge referred to in the syllabus of the curricular unit and necessary for their training as Higher Technicians or Engineers.

Oceanography

LTAM05 - ECTS To know and understand the major geological, physical, and chemical processes that characterize the oceans. Namely, to acquire knowledge in the following topics:

. Ocean seafloor, its physiography, evolution processes and implications in ocean dynamics.

. Physical and chemical properties of seawater; understand the phenomena of stratification and stability in the ocean; and gain skills in the characterization and thermohaline analysis of water masses.

. Ocean dynamics and the main forcing elements and phenomena; understand ocean circulation patterns, wave generation and propagation, tidal distribution and characteristics, and sea level change phenomena.

. Contents and distribution of ocean sedimentary environments, their dynamics and implications.

. Dynamics of coastal zones and the various types of coastlines; understand the oceanographic mechanisms forcing coastal dynamics; implications on coastal hazard.

. National oceanic domain in terms of characteristics, dynamics, and legislative framework.

. Implications of climate change in the oceans.

Complementary, to acquire tools for the acquisition, processing and analysis of oceanographic data, using the platforms and portals available at national, European and global level.

Chemistry

LTAM03 - ECTS -Give the student a broad view of the fundamentals of Chemistry, within the scope of their basic scientific training: 
 
-Knowing the atomic structure;
-Be able to write the structure formula of a molecule, identify its geometry and respective polarity;
-Know the concentration units of solutions;
-Perform stoichiometric calculations, determining the amount of reagents needed and products obtained;
-Establish the difference between irreversible reaction and chemical balance and know the various types of chemical balance: acid-base balance and solubility balance;
-Perform pH calculations of acid and base solutions (strong and weak);
-Determine the solubility of a poorly soluble substance;
-Recognize the importance of redox reactions and identify the species involved.

Mathematics II

LTAM06 - ECTS

The objective of curricular unit (UC) is to provide students with basic knowledge of linear algebra and skills to deal with the mechanisms of differential calculus in scalar and vector fields, mathematical tools of great importance in the professional training of a higher technician or engineer.

Materials and Recycling

LTAM09 - ECTS

The overall goal of the unit is to provide general knowledge of materials used in engineering applications, their structure and typical properties, and their processing and recycling methods.
Specific objectives to achieve are:

  • To know metallic materials and their properties, with relevance to ferrous and aluminium alloys.
  • To know ceramic materials, both technical and traditional, and their typical properties; to know sintering and vitrification phenomena and to relate them with ceramic and glass properties.
  • To know polymeric materials and their typical properties, production and processing techniques, recognizing the effect of processing additives on attained properties.
  • To know composite materials, with relevance to fibre reinforced polymers.
  • To thoroughly know dedicated recycling processes for each family of materials, including their advantages and limitations and typical properties, markets and common applications of the resulting secondary materials.

Environmental Microbiology

LTAM08 - ECTS It is intended that students:
-Avalise and recognize the contribution of Microbiology in other sciences and their applications
-Identify the different classes of micro-organisms and their characteristics
-Recognize the main techniques for inoculation, growth and preservation of microorganisms in the laboratory as well as methods of growth control
- Can explain the diversity of habitats vs. nutritional needs and physical needs, as well as the different ways of obtaining and storing energy
-Recognise the intervention of micro-organisms in the recycling of matter and its relevance at the environmental level
At the practical level:
- Can not work under aseptic conditions
-Data skills in the manipulation of bacterial cultures for identification and isolation regardless of source (soil, water, air or other source)
- are able to determine the microbial concentration in an unknown sample using the appropriate method according to their provenance
-Able to evaluate the microbiological quality of a sample of water (residual and consumption) and air in accordance with the legislation in force

Marine Pollution

LTAM07 - ECTS To give the student a broad view of marine pollution in the context of his scientific training of base.

Thermodynamics

LTAM10 - ECTS The domain of fundamental knowledge in thermodynamics, such as: terminology in the area of
thermodynamics, properties of pure compressible substances, first law of thermodynamics applied to closed and open systems, the second law of thermodynamics, entropy, main thermodynamic cycles.

Climatology and Climate Change

LTAM15 - ECTS

Provide students to understand how climatic parameters and the factors that explain, in its dynamics, interfere with the actions of the man and vice versa, particularly land and sea biotic responses. It also analyzes the different impacts, adaptations and mitigation of climate change in society- Integrate problematic acid deposition, greenhouse effect, ozone depletion, and urban heat island with atmosphere and climate system.

Fluid Mechanics

LTAM12 - ECTS The main objective of this UC is to develop the student’s interest in the study of fluid mechanics, in  order to know the main subjects of statics, kinematic and dynamics of fluids to solve the most common problems that arise in engineering.

Environmental Analysis Methods

LTAM14 - ECTS 1. General objectives:
Provide fundamental knowledge in the field of physical-chemical analysis of environmental samples,
leading to an understanding of the relevance (environmental, sanitary and public health) of the main parameters
present in the legislation.
It is intended that the student acquires the knowledge about environmental analysis, necessary to:
-diagnosis and monitoring quality of the environment
-study of risks and environmental impacts
-operation and control of treatment systems.

Spatial Planning and Geographic Information

LTAM11 - ECTS

This subject aims at the study of Spatial Planning (SP) and geographic information (GI).
The SP component has as main objectives:

• Study SP in its multiple aspects, as a scientific discipline, administrative technique and policy that is developed in an interdisciplinary and integrated perspective.

• Explore fundamentals of action in SP, presenting different approaches to territorial planning and management.

• Acquire knowledge of SP support instruments, through the study and integration mechanisms of environmental and landscape variables.

The GI component provides an introduction to the development, terminology and application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS):

• Define nature of GIS and key component of the GI study area.

• Establish relationships between technology, data, methods and organizations in the use of GIS.

• Identify key issues related to design, creation, operation and problems associated with GIS.

Understand the importance of Economics and Management in the economic system and society;

Mastery of fundamental knowledge applicable to production prevention and solid waste management (collection, treatment, recovery, disposal);

Know and apply methods and technologies for waste management in the life cycle of products.

Probability and Statistics

LTAM16 - ECTS - Apply the concepts of random variable and its distribution;
- Solve problems involving models and probability distributions with discrete variables and with continuous variables;
- Understand the concept of random sample and solve problems involving sampling distributions;
- Characterize and apply estimators;
- Construct and interpret confidence intervals;
- Identify and apply the appropriate hypothesis test;
- Identify the relation between hypothesis testing and confidence intervals;
- Build and analyze a simple linear regression model.

Energy Technologies

LTAM18 - ECTS Provide expertise in the following areas
- Know principles of operation of power conversion equipment using combustion: combustion, fuels, oxidants,
combustion products, emissions, flames;
- Know about the main energy conversion technologies using combustion for heat production
- Know about power cycles; cogeneration; fuel cells and hydrogen; biomass and gasification
- To have knowledge of alternative sources of energy, including renewable energy

Water Treatment and Supply

LTAM20 - ECTS It is intended that the student:
-knows the principles of efficient water use;
-knows the principles of protection of surface and groundwater origins;
-knows the processes and unitary operations of water treatment;
-knows how to design the treatment organs;
-knows the main control variables of the process;
-knows how to monitor and operate water treatment plant for its optimization.

Aquaculture and Marine Resources

LTAM23 - ECTS - To know about the history and evolution of fisheries and aquaculture.
- Understand the fundamentals of fisheries biology, evaluation and management of marine resources.
- Describe the main types of aquaculture and fishing gear and techniques.
- Know how to operate aquaculture systems.
- To identify diseases in aquaculture and disease control techniques.
- Being able to assess the main impacts of fishing and aquaculture.

Environmental and Marine Biotechnology

LTAM24 - ECTS

Goals
- To know about the operation and optimization of biological reactors;
- To know how to identify the different types of microorganisms in biological systems;
- To know how to understand the results obtained in the monitoring of biological reactors;
- Mass transfer knowledge applied to aeration;
- To know how to apply knowledge in the recovery of contaminated soil and waste recovery using bilogical processes;
- To have knowledge of marine biotechnology associated with the production of microalgae and macroalgae;
- To know about techniques used in the development of new products based on biotechnology.

Energy Management

LTAM25 - ECTS To make students aware of the rational use of energy and the need for energy transition in contemporary societies. Provide students with knowledge that allows them to recognize, define and evaluate actions for the rational use of energy in different sectors.

Quality, Environment and Safety

LTAM21 - ECTS Integrate fundamental concepts of quality, environment and safety.
Develop and implement the necessary requirements for quality, environment and safety management systems. Develop plans, procedures and documentation regarding the systems.
Develop and implement quality management systems.
Integrate occupational safety and health and environmental management systems with quality management systems. Conduct environmental and safety quality audits.
Assume continuous improvement as an element of organizational development. Create a favorable climate for the internalization of improvement in organizations.
Understand the methodologies used in certification processes.

Air Quality and Gaseous Effluent Treatment

LTAM22 - ECTS The objective of this curricular unit is the attribution of competences in the field of ambient air quality assessment and the prevention and control of the emission of atmospheric pollutants.

Environmental Impact Assessment

LTAM28 - ECTS
The course of the Environmental Impact Assessment's main objective is the development of knowledge on the subject in question, while ensuring a solid background in this scientific area, incorporating the latest developments from a theoretical perspective, applied or in methodology.
Other specific objectives focus on the development of skills and attitudes, enhancing autonomous learning ability in relation to the topics covered in the training and the more general aspects such as scientific work of future realization, communication, synthesis and interconnection of knowledge and critical analysis.

Drainage and Wastewater Treatment

LTAM26 - ECTS
  • know, desing and explore sanitation networks;
  • know how to explore sanitation networks;
  • explain the functioning of each of the unit operations and processes referred to in the program point;
  • desing each of the operations or processes referred to in the Program point;
  • understand the different carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus removal processes;

Traineeship/Projetc in Environment and Marine Technology

LTAM29 - ECTS

Objectives:

- Conceive, prepare and monitor the implementation of projects involving one or more specific disciplines in environment and marine technologies;

- Provide students with the analysis of technology problems, similar to those they will find in their professional activity, as well as develop skills to solve problems and propose solutions;

- Stimulate the ability to analyze and synthesize, allowing the integration of technical and scientific knowledge acquired in the various areas developed in the course;

- Develop a critical sense.

Environmental Management and Risk

LTAM27 - ECTS - Know different strategies of organizations for the environment.
- Know how to apply methodologies and environmental management tools in organizations
- Know the fundamentals and main lines of application of the tools to support the environmental management of products
- Know and understand the concepts associated with risk management
- Know how to identify and characterize natural and technological risks with effects on the environment at a local, regional or global level
- Know the methods and tools for risk assessment and management
- Plan continuous improvement: audits, training, improvement actions
- Know how to integrate environmental and risk management in the sustainability strategy of organizations
