Objetivos
- Understand the manufacturing philosophy inherent to additive manufacturing (AM), its generic steps, and its advantages and limitations.
- Describe the available AM technologies and the specific materials they are suitable for.
- Know how to apply the acquired concepts in the AM of polymeric parts.
- Understand the suitability of AM to the specificities of parts for biomedical applications.
- Compare the suitability of additive technologies vs. conventional forming for the manufacture of specific biomedical products.
- Be able to recommend the most appropriate modelling technology for the manufacture of specific biomedical products.
- Be able to recommend the most appropriate additive technology for the manufacture of specific biomedical products.
- Be able to design new parts that can be made additively, by geometric integration of existing products

- INTRODUCTION TO ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING
1. Introduction
Additive manufacturing vs subtractive technologies. ASTM definition. Historical approach. Different designations.
1.2. The Generic Process of Additive Manufacturing
Conceptualization and CAD. Conversion to STL/AMF. Transfer and manipulation of STL files. Equipment configuration. Construction of the part. Removal and cleaning. Post-processing.
1.3. Advantages and limitations of Additive Manufacturing
Complexity, integration and geometric customization. Cost. Tolerances and surface finish.
2. PROCESSES AND MATERIALS FOR ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING
2.1. Liquid-based systems
Vat photopolymerization. Material jetting.
2.2. Solid-based systems
Material extrusion. Sheet lamination.
2.3. Powder-based systems
Binder jetting. Powder bed fusion. Directed energy deposition.
2.4. Post-processing
