Objetivos

The overall goal of the unit is to provide general knowledge of materials used in engineering applications, their structure and typical properties, and their processing and recycling methods.
The specific objectives to achieve bu the students are:

  • To know metallic materials and their properties, with relevance to ferrous and aluminium alloys.
  • To know ceramic materials, both technical and traditional, and their typical properties; to know sintering and vitrification phenomena and to relate them with ceramic and glass properties.
  • To know polymeric materials and their typical properties, production and processing techniques, recognizing the effect of processing additives on attained properties.
  • To know composite materials, with relevance to fibre reinforced polymers.
  • Know the separation processes for each family of materials; know the respective advantages and limitations.
  • To thoroughly know dedicated recycling processes for each family of materials, including their advantages and limitations, typical properties, markets and common applications of the resulting secondary materials.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

Knowledge of the families of materials used in technology and engineering: metals, polymers, ceramics and composites and the relationship between their properties, structure, processing and performance in service.
Knowledge of the recycling ability of each family and of the most common separation and recycling processes.

Obtenção de frequência

HYPOTHESIS 1
Distributed evaluation WITHOUT final exam

  • 2 intermediate tests (70%)
  • 5 labs with delivery of written report (30%)

- Tests have no minimum score; average ≥ 8.5/20
- No consultation allowed
- It is mandatory to carry out both tests
- Students who opt for test evaluation can only propose to appeal
   examination.

- No minimum score for lab reports.
- Group work.
- There's no recap of reports.
- Reports are delivered in pdf version, by email, within 1 week,
  maximum.

- Failing to deliver an evaluation element implies "zero" score on that
  component

Course approval requires final grade ≥ 9,5 val.

HYPOTHESIS 2

Distributed evaluation WITH final exam.

- Final exam - 70%
- Laboratory work with written report (4 works) - 30%

- Mandatory exam grade ≥ 9.0/20
- No consultation allowed
- Students who opt for tests evaluation , can only propose to appeal.
   exam.

- Lab reports do not have minimum grade.
- There's no recap of reports.

- Failing to deliver an evaluation element implies "zero" score on that
  component

Course approval requires final grade ≥ 9,5/20

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

HYPOTHESIS 1
Distributed evaluation WITHOUT final exa

NF = 0.7xT + 0.3xL

onde
NF - final grade
T - test average
L - lab reports average

HYPOTHESIS 2
Distributed evaluation WITH final exam

NF = 0.8xE + 0.2xL

onde
NF - final grade
E - exam grade
L - lab reports average

Avaliação especial (TE, DA, ...)

Working Students, Federated Athletes, Student's Unions Leaders  and Students under the Law of Religious Freedom must contact the  professor by the end of the second week of the semester, to present their relevant specificities, as provided for in the respective diplomas.
