Objetivos
At a theorethical level, this curricular unit provides the students with the fundamental knowledge in digital systems as well as its control with sinchronous state machines.
At a laboratorial level, this unit introduces the students to breadboarding techniques and provides knowledge about the most common TTL and CMOS componentes. Another objective is for the students to try the programmable logic design and circuit simulation software, as well as to develop the ability to synthesize and analize digital circuits (especially for malfunction detection and correction). Finally, this curricular unit intends to initiate the students in the autonomous project development.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem
Theoretical classes:
Lectures about the concepts of each of the syllabus themes. Analysis of case-studies and exercise practice in order to consolidate different methodologies for different situations.
Laboratory classes:
Students execute practical works in which they apply the concepts learned in theoretical classes. Part of the classes is dedicated to the development of a practical project in which they apply one of the control techniques learned.
Evaluation:
There are two aspects taken in consideration: theoretical evaluation and practical evaluation. The theoretical evaluation can be achieved by 3 minitests or, by exclusive alternative, by final exam. The practical evaluation is composed of 7 laboratorial works and a final project.

There are two assessment components: a theoretical (T) and a practical (P). Theoretical assessment can be obtained by taking 3 mini-tests (MT) throughout the semester or, for students excluded from continuous assessment, by an exam (Ex) at the end of the semester.
It is not possible to take more than one test on each assessment date, so a student who fails any of the mini-tests will only be able to recover these tests on the exam date. The theoretical grade results from the average of the mini-tests or the exam grade and is a value presented to 2 decimal places.
The practical assessment consists of laboratory assignments (L) and a final project (PF), work that must be original and elaborated with the active participation of all members of the group that the student is part of. Note: the number of laboratory assignments depends on the academic calendar according to the plan presented to the students.
Each laboratory work is evaluated based on the student's performance in preparing the work and in the respective classes, the report presented and the final discussion.
The practical assessment is determined by the weighted average of the classification obtained in each laboratory work and in the project and is presented to 2 decimal places.
This component of the assessment will only be completed when the established deadlines are met and after all components and other materials required by the laboratory have been returned.
Failure to deliver or fail any of the laboratory work or fail to complete or fail the final project will result in failure in the course.
For students who are excluded from continuous assessment, at the time this form is written, there is no alternative for obtaining the practical assessment necessary for success in this curricular unit. These students will have, within a maximum period of 15 consecutive days after exclusion from continuous assessment (or the last day of classes if this occurs first), to contact the person responsible for the UC to find a solution that enables the completion of the practical assessment in due time.
The minimum score in each of the assessment instruments is 9.50 points.
Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final
NF = 0.5 x T + 0.5 x P
on what:
T = MAX((mT1 + mT2 + mT3) / 3; Ex)
P = 0.4 x AVERAGE(Wx) + 0.6 x PF
with T>=9.50; Lx>=9.50 (for all x); PF>= 9.50
Key:
NF - Final Grade
T - Exam grade or mini-test average (see note 1)
P - Practical component grade
mTx - Mini-test score x (see note 1)
Lx - Laboratory work grade x (see note 2)
PF - Course Final Project Grade
Notes:
(1) In case the theoretical assessment is based on mini-tests, all of them must have a classification equal to or greater than 9.50. The same applies to the classification obtained by examination.
(2) All works must have a grade equal to or greater than 9.50 values.
(3) According to the valuation regulation currently in force, all installments are presented with 2 decimal places except for the final grade (NF) which is rounded to the nearest unit.
Provas e trabalhos especiais
The holding of tests in a special period for final year students, working students and association leaders, is subject to registration at the Academic Services as per current regulations. The eventual holding of a special period exam only contributes to the theoretical component of the assessment. Students interested in carrying out the practical assessment at this time will have to inform the responsible teacher of their intention during the first fortnight of classes to define the calendar and establish the project's statement.
Avaliação especial (TE, DA, ...)
Working Students, High Competition Athletes, Associative Managers and Students under the Law of Religious Freedom must contact the person responsible for the UC, during the first fortnight of classes, to present their relevant specificities, as provided for in the respective legal diplomas.
Melhoria de classificação
Taking exams for improvement purposes is subject to registration at the Academic Services in accordance to current regulations. The improvement of the grade focuses only on the theoretical component of the assessment.
Observações
Attendance:
Based on the ESTSetúbal/IPS Student Development Assessment Regulation, the Pedagogical Council decided that, in order to carry out a course in continuous assessment, the student must be present in a minimum percentage of 75% of classes (by type).
Course Moodle page:
Enrollment on the course's Moodle page is mandatory in order to access the materials available and to access the various assessment tools (mini-tests, practical assignments and exams).
Rules for taking tests:
The rules for carrying out the Final Project and for taking Minitests/Exams are available for consultation on the course's Moodle page wich is mandatory.
Repeat students:
Students who have failed but who have obtained a positive assessment in any of the components (theoretical or practical) in the past year may be exempted from taking that component this year. For this, they must send an email to the person responsible for the course, during the first fortnight of classes, declaring their intention to keep the grade of the previous year. However, if the student chooses to retake any test of the component previously approved, the classification of the previous year is immediately forgotten, prevailing the one obtained in the current year.
