Objetivos
1- Understand the technical concepts of measurement and instrumentation;
2- Develop the ability to identify and characterize families of biomedical instruments;
3- Develop the ability to analyze and solve measurement and technical safety problems of biomedical devices;
4- Apply and integrate multidisciplinary knowledge of engineering and biomedical sciences for the design and implementation of biomedical devices;
5- Correctly use electronic and virtual instruments in acquisition and measurements of biomedical signals and quantities;
6- Develop the ability to identify and evaluate possible sources of error that affect the quality of biomedical measurements:
7- Develop the ability to demonstrate the working principles of various biomedical devices, interpret test results and recommend the adequacy of a measurement methodology or biomedical instrument in a multidisciplinary context.

Knowledge and skills of instrumentation and measurement, applied to biomedical engineering, in the following areas:
1. Metrology;
2. Transducers;
3. Parametric characterization of biosignals;
4. Medical instrumentation;
5. Visualization and recording instruments;
6. Data acquisition and virtual instrumentation;
7. Calibration of medical equipment and devices.

Pré-requisitos (conhecimentos prévios) e co-requisitos (conhecimentos simultâneos)
Elementary knowledge in the following areas: electrical engineering; circuit analysis; operational amplifiers; microcontrollers.
Programa
1. Metrology: general concepts and their application in the field of medical instrumentation. Static characteristics: measurement range, range, hysteresis, accuracy, uncertainty, repeatability, linearity, sensitivity and resolution. Dynamic characteristics: bandwidth, time constant and response time. Calibration and error compensation. Influence quantities and measurement techniques to compensate for measurement errors.
2.Transducers for medical instrumentation: inductive, capacitive, resistive and piezoelectric transducers; Hall effect magnetic sensors; displacement, temperature, pressure and flow measurement; radiation thermometry and radiation sensors; ultrasounds; optical and fiber optic sensors.
3.Parametric characterization of biosignals: blood pressure; electromyogram (EMG); electrocardiogram (ECG); electroencephalogram (EEG). Electrodes for acquiring biosignals. Biopotential amplifiers. Electromagnetic compatibility.
4.Medical instrumentation: blood pressure measurement; ultrasound; X ray; computed axial tomography; magnetic resonance and scintigraphy.
5. Instruments for viewing and recording biomedical signals in the time and frequency domain (oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer).
6.Data acquisition and virtual instrumentation;
7.Calibration of medical equipment and devices.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem
The discipline is organized in theoretical-practical modules. In the modules there will be different types of theoretical-practical presentations related to the themes under analysis, demonstrations, group work, examples, case studies, practical exercises and continuous assessment.
The pedagogical methods and techniques that will be used are: expository method (with audiovisual support), demonstrative, interrogative, active methods, reinforcement contingency methods, experimental methods with simulation exercises. In practical classes, practical work will be developed, in order to confirm the knowledge acquired in theoretical-practical classes.
The evaluation methodology includes a summative component and a formative component. The summative component will include the completion of 2 tests or final exam and in the formative the following aspects will be valued, among others: participation in classes; development of autonomous work, problem solving, preparation of laboratory work, answering questions posed by the teacher and carrying out other works.

The final grade is calculated according to the following formula:
NF=0.7*EF/T+0.1*LAB/DSA+0.2*MN, where:
EF/T- average classification of the 2 continuous assessment tests or classification in the final exam; LAB- individual laboratory classification; DSA- classroom performance (includes preparation and execution of laboratory work and the respective preparation); LAB- group laboratory classification.
In the case of assessment by exam, the grade of the EF/T component corresponds to the classification obtained in this test, although attendance and approval in the laboratory component and the execution of the mini-project are mandatory for approval at the UC.
