Resultados de aprendizagem e competências
Product Development
Acquisition of skills in medical products development, including structured methods of development, identifying
opportunities, identifying customer needs, generating specifications, generation and selection of concepts
and prototyping.
Computer Aided Engineering
Acquisition of skills in the use and understanding of integrated systems for modeling, machining, computer aided
engineering and technical representation, used in the design and manufacture of medical products,
including prosthesis, implants and rehabilitation equipment, employing biomaterials and biomechanics principles.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem
The teaching methodology is based on two components:
- Classroom teaching, where several case studies are presented, exemplifying the module's contents;
- Hands-on laboratory classes where students will be invited to develop a medical product, based on the concepts acquired in the first part of unit curriculum. This work is divided into several parts in order to detail the concept chosen to meet the needs of this problem.
Continuous evaluation
Theoretical component (TP):
- 1 report on the development of a medical product (RE)
Pratical component (PL):
- 1 presentation on the modelling of a medical product (AP)
- Minimum 75% attendance of classes (PPL)
Please note:
Both components shall be conducted as group work (2 or 3 students).
Evaluation in exam season:
- 1 written test (TE)
- 1 hands-on project on the modelling of a medical product (PP)
Please note:
In exams season (first/second/third), the written test will include TP and PL components. The hands-on project will follow the same structure of the work developed during the semester, in terms of the modelling of a medical product. During this season, works developed individually will be allowed. The oral presentation is mandatory for approval in this component.

Continuous assessment in classroom context.
Report (theoretical component) + presentation of hands-on project and attendance (pratical component)
Minimum classification required for approval: 9.5 points
Note on attendance:
Students must participate in 70% or more of the PL classes in order to be evaluated in this component; justification for missed classes must be sent to the module leader. Participation is considered if the student is present for at least 2 of the 3 hours of each PL class.
If this participation is not achieved, the student will score 0 points in the PL component.
Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final
Continuous evaluation:
Final classification = 0.50*RE + 0.50*AP
Evaluation in exam season:
Final classification = 0.70*TE + 0.30*PP
