Objetivos

1. General objectives:
Provide fundamental knowledge in the field of physical-chemical analysis of environmental samples,
leading to an understanding of the relevance (environmental, sanitary and public health) of the main parameters
present in the legislation.
It is intended that the student acquires the knowledge about environmental analysis, necessary to:
-diagnosis and monitoring quality of the environment
-study of risks and environmental impacts
-operation and control of treatment systems.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

- Know the legislation applicable to water, sludge and soil.
- Know the meaning of different environmental, sanitary and public health parameters.
- Know the main analytical techniques.
- Be able to carry out sampling, analytical determinations and statistical analysis in water, water
waste, soils, residues, fish, bivalves, etc.
- Be able to verify the compliance of the result obtained with environmental legislation, carry out an analysis
review of the results and proposal of corrective actions.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

In theoretical-practical (TP) classes, concepts are taught with the aid of slides and are solved
exercises related to each parameter. However, the approach is intended to be very practical,
that a great focus is given to the laboratory component of the discipline.

In laboratory classes, the parameters studied are determined in various types of samples (water, wastewater, sludge or soil/waste, fish/shellfish/algae).

List of possible work to be carried out:
- pH, Temperature, Conductivity (water)
- Chlorides by volumetry (Mohr) and ion chromatography (consumer water) - Method validation
- Acidity, alkalinity and hardness (drinking water)
- Dimensional analysis (Length, width, volume), Dry weight, Ash (fish, bivalves)
- Turbidity, Total Suspended Solids, Total Solids (surface water)
- Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) (waste water)
- Biochemical Oxygen Demand in (waste water)
- Amonical Nitrogen, Kjeldahl Nitrogen, Nitrites and Nitrates (waste water, fish/bivalves-protein)
- Analysis of a contaminant by HPLC (high pressure liquid chromatography)

Obtenção de frequência

In order to pass the course, a minimum grade of 9.5 points is required for the laboratory practice component and a minimum grade of 9.5 points for the theoretical component.

Final Grade = 65% theoretical grade + 35% laboratory grade

Theoretical Component
It can be carried out by continuous assessment (1) or final exam (2)
(1) Continuous assessment: 70% minimum attendance -> 2 tests. In the 1st exam period, the student can make the recovery of one of the tests (or exam if you prefer)
(2) Final Exam: 1st season and Appeal

Practical Component (Laboratory)
- Can only be performed by continuous assessment: mandatory attendance.
- The evaluation is made by the reports/questionnaires/posters delivered within the stipulated deadlines as well as 1 oral discussion of reports (grade from 1 to 5, later converted from 1 to 20, max. 20% lab grade).
Comments:
- there is 1 recap class to complete missing work, the absence of a data processing class implies the delivery of an individual report with a set of data provided by the teacher
- each day of delay in the report delivery deducts 1 value
- extra/optional: the performance of 1 volunteering action in the area of the course is valued (corresponds to the equivalent of an extra report, with a classification of 20 values that enters the average of the practical component).

The Professor reserves the right to, in specific or general cases, carry out an EXTRA oral test on theoretical or laboratory subjects, with the final grade of the component being: 50% oral test + 50% written elements (tests, exams or reports). The oral test will be carried out in the presence of at least two teachers.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

In order to pass the course, a minimum grade of 9.5 values is required for the laboratory practice component and a minimum grade of 9.5 values for the theoretical component.

Final Grade = 65% theoretical grade + 35% laboratory grade

Melhoria de classificação

In second season exam

Observações

For students who intend to carry out continuous assessment, theoretical-practical classes (TP) have a mandatory attendance of 70%.

Laboratory classes are mandatory, with a recap class at the end of the semester to complete (1) any missing work.

The Environmental Analysis course has 6 ECTS, corresponding to 150 h. The course has a total of 5 hours per week, 75 hours of classes per semester. The remaining 75 hours are devoted to the preparation of reports, questionnaires and posters, study for tests or final exam.

-Clarification of Doubts (Ana Mata, F104): Monday, 10h00-11h00 - Teams, MAA team
IMPORTANT: Students who wish to clarify doubts should send an email or contact Teams to the teacher (ana.mata@estsetubal.ips.pt) until the day before.

- Support materials (slides, laboratory protocols, etc.) can be found on Moodle and/or Teams.

-The use of cell phones during classes is prohibited, unless expressly indicated by the teacher.

-Working Students, High-Competition Athletes, Associative Directors and Students under the Religious Freedom Law must send an email to the Teacher by the second week of the semester, to present their relevant specifics, under the terms provided for in the respective diplomas.
